i'm interested a used V8V, through private ads, not through dealers.

i've seen a few around that i like. budget is open unto £70k but i don't feel i need to spend more than about £40k.

however, i've just done something i've never thought of before. in looking through the prices i have entered the details onto the webuyanycar site to see what an approximate trade in value would be. to guage accuracy with the site i have also entered details of other known cars with known trade in prices and they seem to provide valuations within about £2 which is not too bad.

what i have noticed is that private sellers are invariably around 15k higher than trade in, which i would then conclude is around dealer price. clearly if you are buying privately you should be paying some way inbetween dealer and trade in price - perhaps half way???

is this a logical argument? one car i am interested in is up for just under £40, but the webuy site is offering £23440 for it. quite some discrepancy.

thoughts?

I would say these "webuy" type sites are even worse than trade value and shouldn't be used as fair price indicator. A car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. You just need to look at the average prices on Autotrader etc.. to get an idea if the car is worth what it's up for. Or post it on here and we'll all offer our opinion.

Unrealistic to use "webuy" as a price guide for an Aston.
O.K. For 10 year old Ford etc that you just want rid of.
Many of us go the main dealer route for 1-2 year warranty for piece of mind, still it's your choice.

WBAC valued my TVR at £3k...... I sold it privately for £10.5k..

My conclusion is that WBAC are wkers and haven't got a clue when it comes to buying anything other than Vectras, Golfs and Mondeoes..

You'd be surprised how close to private sale price the dealer offers. Rough maths works out that I was offered under 10% less than I would have sold it for privately on a 2007 car.
OK, so they should be able to do a little better. And it is the right colour for the forecourt and loaded with all options which makes it good for a quick flip. What it means is that WBAC is not a guide price.

Thanks for the useful answers. Certainly interested in the possible only 10% discrepancy between dealer and private sales price. Also fair point that WBAC is really for your vw fords than prestige. Why didn't I think of that!

A cars worth what people are prepared to pay for it, which is usually what the going price is on sites like PH and AT.

Trade prices really are just that I'm afraid.

You mention up to £70k, but then refer to £40k.

Presume that you know about 4·3 vs 4·7.
Around £50k will buy a 4·7, but possibly not £40k.
Be very careful if you see any S models.

It's worth noting that places like WBAC will price to reflect their interest rather than say "no thanks", they will have channels for disposing / selling on mainstream cars, so anything niche will attract a low price - probably because it will be a ball ache to move it on. It's the same as insurers "offering" a policy for £10k, they know you wont buy the policy, but is better than not quoting. smile All IMHO of course!

I purchased my V8 privately and very happy with the price I paid. Not masses under dealer prices, but the right price for the age / condition / spec.

Ignoring all of the above - £70k buys you one of these

If I had £70k burning a Vantage-sized hole in my pocket, that's what I would do.

I'm thinking of selling my 2010 V8V if you were interested. Probably looking around the low-50's.

Gents, I am new to the forum and had my V8 Coupe for just one month. On trying to part ex my 911 (997) cab for a Vantage was not as required. I contacted WBAC expecting to get a good kicking and was very surprised by their offer for the 911, as it was about 15% more than what I was offered in part ex. So I went for it, pocketed their cash and went to Mcgurk's and got the best deal I could push for. Nobody was more amazed than me regarding the WBAC offer for the 911, but they gave me what they stated on the net, but my 911 was a near minter. So, I do agree that WBAC is not the gold standard for used car prices, but I can only state as I found it. It costs you nothing for their offer and maybe they could be of assistance. Anyway enjoying the Vantage, it is a nice place to be,seems to be much smoother and quieter than the 911. But I am comparing a Coupe to a soft top so maybe not a good comparison. I must also say many thanks for all the info on this site, it has been very helpful.
Regards
Mick.

WBAC are owned by BCA (Auctions). They won't pay more than they can get at one of their auctions.
As BCA own WBAC, there are little fees between the two.

Just a bit of info.

2009 V12V £46K, that would leave them a very nice £30K profit if they sold it for the current prices being offered at dealers.

Surely the Auctioneer would just bid against himself and any third party until a satisfactory price has been attained confused

Risky, I know, as the 3rd party may pull out but it certainly happens when houses go to auction yes
