Never having owned a F....... and just wondered.
Discussion
Had a mind blowing conversation or two today regarding values on AM's and in particular my own 5 month old example.
As some know my experience with my latest Aston has been some what rocky and one I will choose not to expand apon in this thread, but I
shall merely say the thought of changing out of it had crossed my mind as a fresh start might have been the best in my own personal circumstance
as my love for Astons has never diminished.
My car is all but perfect now but as I haven't been driving it enough I find myself doubting it as a keeper, but after a couple of enquiries today it looks like
its stopping as the trade in prices quoted are frankly disgraceful.
I know my car's still very young to change and that its a bad time of year for such things and the fact that its a Roadster and its winter, but these things said I enquired
about 2 different Volantes that had much higher price tags so I expected to haggle rather than be left disembowelled, bewildered and bemused.
After spending the afternoon sulking as you do in such circumstances I got round to thinking about Ferrari's,much to the Wife's shock and horror..............
Well I thought to myself they at least on paper look to hold there value and it might be a nice change if thats the way Astons are going in the market place,so the
point of my post was 2 fold, firstly has anyone else felt the cold wind of heavier than expected depreciation lately or have I just been unlucky.
Secondly I know some on here have come from or gone to Ferrari so I just wondered out of interest if its the same case there as they seem to be holding healthy prices
in the showroom, but is that also reflected in there trade in value.
Maybe its just the same ?, I don't know so I thought I would ask as today has left me shell shocked, which for me a hardened car buyer was more than surprising.
Yes and before someone says it, yes maybe I should have bought the DBS in the first place and yes its a mans car and all that but the Wife said no...........
Is he a man or a mouse I hear you say, well please pass the cheese......eek.

Mikey,
These were part ex values against a couple of DBS Volante's with much higher asking prices,it was crazy the responses given by the 2 dealers. I had to lay down
to recover at first and my nose started to bleed.
I love my Aston's but as I said it blow my mind,I really didn't{lamb to the slaughter}expect to be looking at a near 50k lose off list in a few months. Now 20k/25k maybe
whilst in part exchange against a used DBS but 50k no thank you.
I can learn to love again rather than play that game....
I can always look to enhance the car after my last few niggles get sorted in January by WS,Seymour 600 I wonder
and a sparkly new wrap.
BTW, heres one for you I've been considering as a stop over.

Losing on cars is a bitter pill to swallow, I know as I've swallowed loads.
It always seems that the grass is always greener, Ferrari's residuals are better than AM from an outsider. If you had a Ferrari you would find that AM hold better than Ferrari as you would be on the 'other' side of the coin. What I am trying to say is the dealers always win.
You could get something different? I had a Ford GT that I just sold as I didn't use it, made a few quid on that but it wasn't useable and certainly wasn't mainstream.
IMO you makes your choice, spends your money and swallow the pills
You only live once, no time for regrets........

Agreed swallow the pills.......but the dealers didn't want me to swallow them nicely with a glass of water..
It was more a case of bend over we are going to insert these extremely rough and oddly shaped tablets for you.....

the first year is the worse...it slows down after that....other brands are just good at maintaining the illusion of residuals...Porsche used to be masters of it but in reality no different to most other premium brands
its much easier to justify if you drive them ...LOTS ...far cheaper per mile of fun...thats how I think of it

Did the Ferrari thing 14 years ago. 355GTB in the correct colours etc. Epic car at the time and loved the F1 gearbox. If I had the money I would have another.
Bought mine 18 months old thinking someone had already taken the hit then decided to move it on 12 months later when we moved as no garage. How wrong could I have been, another gargantuan drop.
Nowadays don't get carried away with used prices versus list as most cars are speced with enough extras to buy a decent used V8V
Go on the forum and see how obsessed they are with residuals, they make our V12VR chaps look tame

I could politely suggest you are a bit of a tart chopping after 5 months.

Ferrari helps support residuals but the marque doesn't carry miles well.
Get an early morning drive in tomorrow before the rest of the world is up and about and reconnect with your car.
I had a piece of advice from an elderly relative which has stayed with me. If you are running late and you have 30 miles to cover for an appointment at 2pm which is in 15 minutes there is no need to get upset or to worry as you are not late. After 2pm and you haven't arrived your late so why worry. Works for me.

I was interested in a DBS Volante (dealer wanted top dollar) and made enquiries with the dealer.
I requested an idea of price for mine before taking the journey North.
It was awful and I just forgot it as I thought the dealer was taking the piss.
I have a certain schadenfreude at seeing the car still with the dealer at £5K less.
I believe the dealer should make a profit but that the deal should be
fair.
I think Grange price their cars sensibly but I have not pxed with them.
P.S. Ed don't leave Astons, who would organize the meetings etc.

Don't mention Tarts we'll get Avinatart over here offering his wisdom and Ladyboys before you know it.

Chopping into change is just toe in water stuff to test the market,an exercise that is clearly icey.I'm sure my love affair will soon rekindle but if you knew the background
to this Aston episode you would probably understand my feeling.
At the end of the day I realise I'm extremely lucky to own a new Aston, so drive it it will be and as soon as the Highland hooning season is apon us again no doubt I'll be happy
as a sandboy.........
BTW, I would say I'm more of a Pudding than a Tart anyway.

Has he any other words of wisdom you wish to share with us ?

Banish the thought how could I ever leave you even though your reasoning might be construed as mercenary, lets hope your Ladyboys come cheap for potential Burghley clients.
Funny old thing really as I thought of you today, well I think about you alot honestly but most of it is worry, but I remembered your interest and posting about the Mako DBS Volante
at a certain Independent dealer as I had enquired for said same car today.
Well what hog wash I got there about it being a very individual car and in demand and not the usual run of the mill.....
well I said you've had it a while so what about a prexmasdeal then........................pause,then the Grinch replied with the usual response about my trade in and there lack of value in the market etc etc.
The reply was the lowest of low offers on mine, looks like they want to keep that one for the museum me thinks or have their christmas cake and eat it.
I'm happy to stay in mine at the end of the day but if they had been sensible it would have been something to seriously consider as the Wife could have filled the plus two's up with
extra bloody shoes and luggage whilst touring.
So Steven do not fear my defection isn't happening it's just a curious irritation like one might encounter with one to many Ladyboys.........

Its a well known fact that Rob & I had a little wobble back in the summer when we thought of leaving the brand. This thread explains a bit more. Ed - yours was post no.11 on the thread and you should read what you advised us & heed your own advice:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I know it may get a bit tedious when we go on about Bamford Rose
but there are reasons for us doing that. They have been brilliant in helping us get everything right (admittedly with a car that should have been perfect in the first place) and then turning Pearl into something very special. Hate to say it Ed but have you considered going down this route? You know quite a lot of happy BR customers now and we are not talking about converting old bangers into noisy boy-racer mobiles, we are talking intelligent individuals entrusting their new car to a team of ex-Aston Martin development engineers for them to release the car's true potential and build upon it!
Forget depreciation. Follow our advice and turn your car into something very special - a real keeper!

Ed, if you haven't been driving it enough, what make you think that doing a whole bunch of cash to buy another piece of exocita means you're going to be doing any more miles? Perhaps you need to buy a Range Rover instead???
Yeah, Range Rover residuals are great...for the used 2nd buyer

Being Irish he had a comment that covered most eventualities….unfortunately I didn't inherit any of his eloquence.
I have a great affection for the Irish, Martin, good story tellers and up for a laugh.
