I will shortly have the go ahead to transfer private plates.

Has anyone any practical advice for safely removing the rear plate without causing damage?

Do I simply pull or is there a way to break the sticky pads without stressing any bodywork/paint etc?

Thanks
Mark

A good squirt of WD40 will break down the adhesive, then use dental floss to ease the plate off. Just don't forget to use alcohol wipes to then remove all traces of WD40 otherwise your new plates won't stick for very long!

Use a piece of strong nylon string, to cut the adhesive pads. Clean off the residue with panel wipe, this won't damage the paint. I use 3M double sided body tape instead of the white sticky number plate pads, it sticks much better and is easier to clean off.

As above but I used dental floss behind the existing plate and a sawing motion to slice through the sticky pads. I couldn't be arsed to remove the residue because it was bloody freezing so just stuck the new pads over them, worked a treat.
Four pads on the rear, five on the front.

Also good idea to save the plates because when you eventually transfer the private plate the DVLA invariably reallocate the same number back.

Good luck smile

I've used heavy duty velcro to hold on my no plates for years. Unfortunately last year one of the pads came unstuck from the body and my rear number plate was last seem some were near the Milau Bridge hehe
Luckily I carry an MOT spare which a nice French garage owner stuck on with 3M body tape (that ain't never coming off!)

I've found the best way is dental floss followed by a cloth with white spirit, soak the "glue" for a minute or so then it easily rubs off. WD40 is rubbish frown
