F Type Coupe is going to hurt Aston
Discussion
You have changed your tune Michael.
Sales might indeed be lost and is is very important that Aston rise to the challenge.
One must worry how long that cachet of driving an Aston is undermined by an increasingly ageing range.
There is still a gap in the prestige sportscar market between Jaguar, Maserati and Ferrari and Lamborghini
that Aston can fill, however a revised body shape and new technologies need to come along very soon.
The thing is that most of us on this forum wait 2/3 years until the Aston becomes good value but it must become a problem if buying new as to which marque to support.

A nose around the Jag forum will tell you sales are not quite what Jag were hoping for so it's difficult to tell. This is also backed up by one of our customers who supplies them
yep big discounts already available
It's a great looking, great sounding car but somewhat confusing in terms of exactly what it's trying to be
will actually make a great used car buy in a yr or 2 at this rate

my anti-Jag comments are in the main, tongue in cheek......If there are big discounts available then in 12 months time we are going to see the V6 version priced sub 40k ......bloody good value I would say ! but you would still look a knob in one Sales might indeed be lost and is is very important that Aston rise to the challenge.

mmm...if you are in the market for a new £60K car then you might not be buying a £90K one
I dont really think they are direct competitors, unless you are a used buyer. Personally id go for the £75K V12 Vantage option
or the choice is a 12 month old Aston versus new Jag ...I will take the Aston
Aston only sell a few thousand Vantage units worldwide per year, in the UK a few hundred...even if 10% of buyers chose a cheaper Jag instead will it even move the needle for a mass market company like Jaguar?
I would have thought Jag will steal most sales from Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes etc
now should I get a well specced Porsche Boxster or a Jag ...I will take the latter please

I think you comments are very reasonable and the majority of sales will come from Merc/ Porsche ect ......but I cant help thinking that this new coupe is a more modern version of the V8V ....at least looks wiseI dont really think they are direct competitors, unless you are a used buyer. Yeah, I like the rear, not the front so much. I prefer the Aston "face"
the Vantage has been tweaked since 2005...a bit like Porsche do with each iteration of the 911. The differences are subtle and the Vantage is certainly due a major refresh soon
On another note, those new Jags sure are going to be bargains in 3 years time ...especially the big petrol versions ...bring it on. I will take a F type 5.0L 500bhp+ V8 for £30K please

Agreed Nick. Depreciation is a major factor and putting clients off, I have a roadster that I will take to market shortly £30,000 away from list price. In six months! Jag is a volume market lets not forget. Good looking car I admit but Aston market place far stronger long term.
Aston residuals aren't exactly bullet proof. If a Jag can be had for a similar discount in 6-12 months time, Aston residuals are pretty much destined to follow the same route or fall even steeper as the age now really starts to show.
The V12V is and will always be a fine car but it is ageing rapidly. The throttle response on the V12V was slow to say the least, one thing that always bothered me when trying to heel/toe. I just bought an RRS Supercharged and that 5.0L engine is sublime in terms of responsiveness - even trying to move a 2+ tonne SUV.

There has always been a poor mans Aston available, I am sure Aston can cope
That's always been my attitude....but I'm not sure the Jag isn't a better car in terms of performance/fun factor
so perhaps the Aston has become the rich man's Jag

ps your still a knob if you drive one

I looked at the F-Type before buying a V8 Vantage. Although the F Type is significantly cheaper to buy, it feels it. The interior is nice and modern, but it's not a patch on the Vantage.
The whole car just didn't quite excite me the same way the V8V does
Same here, I imagined my Vantage with an injection moulded plastic grille.........The whole car just didn't quite excite me the same way the V8V does
Does that make the Jag a bad car? No way, its great. It's just not what I want in a sports car. What I get most out of the V8VSS is not measured in lb/ft or BHP or dry sumps.

In seriousness though, barring the latest V12 having a go, Aston competitors have always been faster (IMO).
I drove an F-type V6S just before and it is a fine, fine car. Great performance, great gearbox and great noise. But I do feel that it is at least £10k overpriced at list and the horrendous depreciation in the first 6 months tends to confirm this. Not perhaps surprising the F-type coupe will be cheaper that the convertible then maybe.
Plus, and I know this is hardly the point of a sportscar, the boot is tiny! Want a weekend away? Then pack very, very light. I mean so light that your toothbrush needs to be of the folding variety. The Vantage has certainly got its failings, but IMHO, it is both more desirable and more practical.
Great cars both though and I'm just pleased that Britain makes cars to take the fight to the ubiquitous German brands

Aston have rarely had "the fastest" except when the old twin supercharged V8 was around
the Italians are always quicker and flasher...but usually at the expense of shorter service intervals etc
part of the appeal of a modern Aston is how useable it is and relatively inexpensive to run compared to Italian stuff. It really is a daily driver ...a bit like a posh Jag

the dbs costs me almost exactly the same as the gallardo ,insurance, servicing and mpg are almost identical (the lambo slightly better on the fuel ).the Italians are always quicker and flasher...but usually at the expense of shorter service intervals etc

Whats the service intervals on a G these days ? 10K miles ? ...i guess the Audi influence has changed them for the better over the years. Combined with internet horror stories of £8K clutches every 10K miles...as comparison I did 20K miles in 18 months in my Vantage when I first got it, and had just done the same in an Audi RS6. The latter cost 2x total service/consumables than the Vantage. People were astounded when I told them how economical a modern Aston was compared to an Audi estate car
