I'm trying to use my car more this winter , but I'm worried about the affects of road salt. Is underbody flushing the answer or can it do more harm than good?
As a mountain biker I know jet washing is the worst thing you can do to seals and bearings.

I use a Karcher under chassis washer that produces a fine mist as opposed to a strong jet like you get directly from a lance. I never use detergent with either and if used after a drive, before any salt etc has chance to dry, I'm convinced it thoroughly but gently cleans it.

Rich, you're just down the road from me so if you need access to a ramp there's this mad guy down the road from me called Vanquish Neil and I'm sure he wouldn't mind so long as you are able to start his car in the first place rolleyes

Quinny is even nearer to you but I think he has sold his ramp now. smile

Only problem is that you need a smoothish surface to run them on. If you have a stoned drive you will definitely struggle. Other than that, I think they are a very efficient way of thoroughly washing the underside of the car. Bonus is that they are adjustable so can be raised to wash the 4x4's as well.

I don't live a million miles away from Neil and you are more than welcome to try mine if you want.

in the old days people used to Waxoyl their cars before winter...it will last a season or more. On my bikes (powered and unpowered) I just coat them in ACF50 pre-winter and its washed off over in the big Spring clean

Cars are a bit more tricky to protect, and some will argue, its just a car, and designed to be used as one in all weathers. If its your daily transport then its too much faff, I just clean it weekly during winter. If you try to jet wash underneath on your drive, you cant get into all the nooks n crannies so you end up just surface cleaning anyway...and the lasting damage is in all the places you cant get where any salt/damp will sit anyway

So if its a special car you intend to keep forever then I would be inclined to not use it in winter at all or waxoyl if you do

If you change cars every few years, then I wouldnt bother going OTT. You are just wasting your time and money keeping it in good nick eventually for owner number 4 in 12 years time who will find he has a well looked after car wink

Only just Darren. As I can't drive for another week, I'm trying to bide my time by thinking of ways to amuse myself with just my right hand!

Thanks all.

It's not a daily drive, but would love to use it more than I do in the winter... Waxoyl sounds like the way to go. Can anybody recommend someone in the north west who has the requisite experience?

I did take her in to Wales on Friday but the weathers been so mild and wet that I doubt there was much salt on the roads anyway.

Thanks again for all your comments!!

I use a special underbody lance for my karcher as I have a gravel drive.

Waxoyl is good but the Bilt Hamber stuff is the way to go.

Perhaps I'm being thick but surely driving on soaking unsalted roads cleans out the salt from the previous week. idea

Is that before or after burying it in gravel?

Sure thing Einstein.....once the damage is done rolleyes

Obviously a cop out by Insurers lest they are faced with a claim for damages wink

does it really corrode in a week in winter?

how long can you drive between washes before corrosion sets in ?

...seriously, do we not think that Aston Martin might have done some durability testing on the cars or do they dissolve when it rains ? smile

Any car will suffer it you use it when wet, salty, whatever. Surely the best option if you are that bothered about keeping it pristine for the next 20 years is dont use it in the rain or winter.

or buy 2 - one to look at in the garage and another to drive smile
