preparing for the demise of XP using a Windows 8 Update Disc
Discussion
I would like to prepare for the demise of XP support etc. by hopefully preparing a CDROM or DVD(if necessary) from which I can install a copy of XP SP3 onto a fresh install, and then upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.
The reason is I have a licenced version of XP Home with Service Pack 2 on disc. I just bought a Windows 8 Pro disc which can upgrade from XP with SP3 (Check - read the very small print before buying Windows).
As I see it I need to have a hard copy of SP3, or XP Home with SP3 installed, from which I can perform a fresh install (say on a new PC or to reformat and re-install), then upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.
I believe the XP update site may still work after support stops, but I'd rather have the Discs if possible so I am not relying on that eventuality.
Is there a way to prepare and keep a bootable XP SP3 Disc that would be suitable, and if so how?

Steve I know the AM forum has been a bit quiet of late but please.........
Bloody hell, a complete fail!
maybe it's time I swapped for a DB9 - obviously I have Alzheimer's coming, I thought I was on the Computer section!
Anyway, it will provide a means of talking about drinking, weekends out, insurance, Jockman, Carbon bits and no doubt much much more!
I'm off to take my tablets.............

The world of technology announces their product is obsolete, and almost everyone buys the latest version. Brilliant.
XP is considered one of the best verions of Windows.
It will continue to work after support ends, as I still prove with DOS 3 and Windows 98.
There is a cheap and simple protection against attack. Keep your important private data on a PC that is not connected to the outside world.
Can we talk Aston Martin now?
I imagine you need either an emergency boot disk or installation disk of XP at SP3. You could see if anyone has a version of windows you can borrow for the install process. The licence key is generally not on the media so if all the install is doing is verifying you had a version of XP then the version you have could be fine.
The easiest route they want you to follow is to update to SP3 then upgrade although as you've probably sussed its a one way trip. And I'm not a great fan of backup and restore on windows.
I upgraded to 7 and I used a different hard disk, got it working, copied all the files across etc but it does mean a re-install of all applications etc which for me was an option to get rid of all the old rubbish. Computers do seem to run better after a fresh install compared to an upgrade so I'd recommend that route anyway.
Its also customary on the site to post pictures of new acquisitions

You could create a Virtual machine image of your current WinXP OS
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows
You can then treat this as a backup and even 'run it as a VM' should you ever need to.

Yo, Steve....I've just bought a laptop (sick of running dropbox on a tablet) and Windows 8 was pre-installed.
What a load of s

I've made all the adjustments in the notification section to ensure I run a normal desktop without those ridiculous pre-installed apps

Got mine to look like Windows 7 most of the time. Can't be bothered with using Windows 8 in Tile mode as the PC also runs Android - for when I want that type of functionality and obvioulsy loads more apps. Even got MS Office running on Adroid.

Just install 8.1 and a proper start button (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/). Then you can boot directly to the desktop and have a start that looks and functions just like Windows 7. You need never see the metro/tile interface again !What a load of s

I agree, and certainly put that into practice.Far too many people want to have the latest software, with a pretty appearance.
You may not believe it, but I still use a Lotus 123 spreadsheet (remember that?).
I don't care how pretty the numbers look, I just want money making numbers.
