goodby maserati 4200 hello db9?
Discussion
i currently have an 02 4200 cambio with 32k on the clock and im thinking of getting an early model, entry level, hi milage 04-05 db9. just a couple of questions if anyone can help
1.my mazer is robotised manual so semi automatic with a clutch. do the db9s gearboxs work the same way and have clutches that need replacing??
2.i can practicaly turn the 4200 in to the next model up (the gransport) with an aftermarket drive by wire upgrade (£600 used) + sports exaust (£1000) + drop the coilovers all 4200's come with 10mm. how easy is it to get extra power out of an early db9 and make it handel like the later models and what are the costs??
3. despite the rumours my car has been reliable how do do you think a db9 will fair up in comparision? i havnt had to spend that much yet but i always budget for about 2k a year servicing the 4200
4.what does everyone make of this car and its price? id like a white db9

Auto DB9s have a torque converter, so no clutch. Manual ones have three pedals, and have a clutch (obviously).
I think you'll find an AM more expensive to run, especially an early "high" mile DB9. Servicing is not that bad, but they get through parts at a fair rate.
You can get some very significant performance upgrades (e.g. at Bamford Rose, see the sticky thread), but it's more money than that.
Shop around - there's a lot of early DB9s on the market, but many haven't been well looked after in the last few years. They can be real money pits, and some people like to cut corners when the big bills come in... I would think an inspection by a reputable specialist is a must, unless you're buying from a dealer.
The dealer's one year warranty is actually pretty good, so worth considering going that route.

I ran a 3200 and a DB9 side by side for 6 months. Compaired to a 3200 (which everyone who hasn't owned one slates) the DB9 was very disappointing. It reminded me of driving a big OLD Ford. Most irritating because they do look nice. I suggest you try a DB9 for as long a test as you can get away with, then say no thanks and stick with you Mas as I did.
ah right so the db9 is auto with manual overide?
ha i used to have a 3200. i bought it without even trying a 4200 cause i just fell in love with the lights.
when that one had gone and i was looking for a replacement i drove a 4200 and let me tell you i soon forgot about those lights and never looked back. the 4200 feels so much better put together and is more managable in every sense

The 9 is a true auto so no clutch as others have said. The flappy paddles allow you to run it as a semi-auto. In fact it's rare ours gets put in auto as the paddles work so well.
Extra horses are hard to come by in the V12 but by the time the torque and engine note aren't enough, you'll be in a position to upgrade the car or the exhausts etc. the DB9 is a looker that goes like s
t off a shiny shovel. If you need more, you're a better driver than I.
Ours has been rock solid. In fact all three AM's we've had have been no trouble at all. Probably the most reliable cars we've had. Your budget is spot on.
That's a nice car, 20k miles isn't high mileage for the engine in my opinion. But... It's done 76k miles and you do tend to wonder why it's needed one.
Cars 2006 and older at the £35-40 bracket usually will have about 35-40k miles on them from a dealer.
Don't jump in a hurry, get an inspection and enjoy the feeling only an Aston gives.

I have also owned a 4200 cab and a 3200 and now own a DB9, performance wise the 9 feels a little quicker..........76000 miles is very high and I think you can do better.......also don't like the DB9 in white.......the new engine makes the car less desirable

well its gone now, just rang up. aparently had full MD serv his bar 1, was resprayed due to color preference and the engine was fitted brand new from stratstones at a cost of 15k.
mike how does the db9 handle in comparison to the 4200??
A resprayed Aston is not worth a diddly squat .....so your well served that it's sold.......the DB9 is a much bigger car so hadles differently ....it's not as chuckable......suggest you take a few out and perhaps a V8V as a comparison........I did love my 4200 but it did creak a bit and you could feel it flexing mike how does the db9 handle in comparison to the 4200??
