Spotted an early RR Sport today for about £15k from a trader. Popped in to have a look, and suggested I trade in my Vantage...

08 4.3 Roadster Sportshift, heated seats, nav, bluetooth, iPod, front & rear cameras, serviced last week, black with red leather and around 18,000 miles...

£31,000.00 eek

"We have to bid low because they're so expensive when they go wrong - we'll only list that for about £33,000"

I'd already looked on AutoTrader and the cheapest in the UK was £39,990.

Are trade-ins for Astons generally very poor? This trader had a few Bentleys, and R8 and a Murcielago so it's not like I was trying to trade in at my local Ford Dealership.

I'm not sure if it matters but you're not exactly trading in against the RR, more downsizing. The dealer ends up with less cash and a different car which might mean he has a few too many sporty cars. Or if he thought you needed the cash he might take a punt and bid you low. Try we sell any car and similar and see what they say if you're serious about changing.

I'd expect them to be marking yours up by £5-£7k, so at £40k, I'd expect you to be offered £33-£35k. I can't see a dealer looking at only a £2k margin. But then you're not really trading in if you are looking at a car for £15k. In effect they are just buying yours off you.

Dealer trade-ins always seem very low. A few years ago I bought a car for £30k, 2 years later I was offered £12k trade-in !

Stratstones in Wilmslow gave me a cracking trade in from an '07 to an '11. Now I realise they don't shift on price for the car your buying but it was still a competitive ticket on the windscreen. I also got goodies thrown in that made it impossible to say no to.
It had always gone to them for servicing and work. It came from Strats, and when I traded, I lost about £2-2.5k on the price I bought it for 9 months earlier.

Send me a message if your thinking of selling. Quite interested to know more about the condition of your car etc.

Dealer is lying to you if they're saying they'll advertise it for £33k. More like £43k. These cars rarely go wrong, not if looked after properly anyway. Suggest you try another dealer ;-)

they are offering trade price....check Parkers, if you have avg miles on early 2008 car it lists £28k as trade in price...sure its not exact but its realistic to a grand or two of what a non franchised dealer will offer

im sure if you were trading up, with some finance, then there might be another grand or two in the deal to make the deal more appealing, reality is they will make their money elsewhere from you instead

Why not sell it via a dealer rather than trade. Many do commission deals and that way you'll get better money and then you can shop around. Many RR out there, so don't think that's the only one you'll find.

I've sold quite a few cars this way and it's always been much better than PX, good for the dealer too as it opens up a whole load of people who need finance to being able to buy your car, without the hassle for you....and the warranty and finance bonus goes to the dealer for selling your car.

Well I finally found a dealer to sell through, so as sad as it is to see, it's now up for sale here

Fingers crossed...

When I bought six months ago, my final three were priced at £36k, £33k and £39k, and the Parker's prices were £32k, £27k and £32k (for buying, not trade-in). That makes Parker's around £6k under the real price, for buying.

FWIW, Parker's expects a franchised dealer to be around £2.5K higher than a private seller, at your price level. Seems a bit low to me, the dealer has a lot of overheads.
