Whilst I was filling up today the guy behind complemented me on my car--nice!.He then came & said to me that he had just put 12 litres of petrol in his diesel car cause he was distracted admiring my car. Poor bloke didn't know what to do but but he decided to drive off as he had 1/2 a tank of diesel in his Beemer already. Hope his car survived!!!

If I was going to risk that, I think I'd at least brim whatever room was left in the tank with diesel.

^^ This. Although with modern common rail systems they are much more sensitive. I'd be brimming the tank with diesel every few miles and it'll be ok yes

Or perhaps he done it on purpose to get a mention on here....or to let his so called friends all drive off and get nicked....leaving him to make his way to the hotel and enjoy a free lunch.....where all of his so called friends had to make do with sandwiches.......

Just s thought.....

I always thought twas t'other way, as the diesel also forms part of the lubricant for the turbo etc?

No its OK providing you don't have more than 5-10% and use it up soon
Ask me how I know whistle
Petrol causes preignition in a diesel and can dissolve some of the seals in the fuel system

No, it's the othe way around. Diesel can be flushed out of a petrol engine. Petrol in a diesel can destroy the injector pump.

I always thought diesels in theory can run on almost any combustible material....chip fat and the such....petrol being more refined.....cannot....petrol is also less dense so passing through diesel injectors should not be a problem.....in theory....

For the sake of £80 worth of fuel.......then call in the AA or RAC and have them drain the tank......you'r bloody stark raving mad to dive off with that mix in your tank.

That was true of the original Rudolf Diesel engine, it could even run off coal dust, with some mechanical changes, but modern common rail ones are very high tech.

People tend to run old Merc barges off chip fat (with a filter, and/or some additive chemicals) as then engines are tough and have high tolerances. Not sure it would work in a current gen engine.

Not sure if it would actually do damage of just stall though?

Cost me £300 excluding the petrol when I did mine?
Excluded from many recovery plans as it is human error not a mac handicap fault frown

Modern high pressure injection diesel are very fussy about the quality of fuel
We even have to give them "winter" diesel now
