Can anyone advise which independent might be best for a new clutch and what it typically costs as opposed to £3K from a main dealer? Many thanks in anticipation.

There is a list of the independent garages in the FAQ thread

A thread reminiscing the hifi sketch from not the nine o'clock news (or was it alas smith and jones) will now follow..

Do you want a single plate or twin plate clutch with that...

Google 'piston bamford clutch' and you'll find a variety of posts on the subject. Others will probably respond when they get the chance

Other after market companies do exist

Here are some of the most popular options:

http://www.bamfordrose.com/v8-and-v12-options.html

http://www.davidapplebyengineering.com/drivetrain%...

http://www.velocityap.com/Aston-Martin-Clutch-Flyw...

If you do a search on here, you'll find plenty of previous threads on all three. There is a (long) Bamford Rose sticky at the top of the page.

I was under the impression that Appleby fit the Prodrive unit.

...so why wouldn't I (or everyone!) get Appleby to do the clutch at less than half what my AM dealer are quoting? Is it too good to be true? Will it invalidate my warranty? They sound like a terrific outfit!

Chris,

You've been here long enough (since 2011, according to your profile) to realise that there have recently been a number of very lightly veiled sales threads on behalf of David Appleby Engineering. Due to the behaviour of the original posters, most of these threads quickly degenerate into a slanging match and have helped to change the 'atmosphere' of this little corner of PH, generally for the worse.

Your initial enquiry, followed by "They sound like a terrific outfit!", looks very much like yet another one of those threads. Hence the rolleyes.

In which case, Chris, you have my apologies.

Your best bet might be to use the search function to bring up some of the previous threads about BR, DAE and Velocity. Then I suggest that you contact each of them and maybe visit one (or all three) of them before making up your mind.

I went through a similar process a few months ago and my car is booked in for lots of work at the end of April. In the interest of parity though, I'm not going to declare where I'm going (just yet).

Message to James Appleby (who, judging by your PM to me, is obviously reading this thread): I suggest that you read the thread properly. Especially my post from 12.01pm.

Can't comment on the first part as have not had any dealings with Appleby but as for your warranty I would fail to see how having a clutch fitted by an independant could invalidate it unless your claim was to be for a faulty clutch in which case you would be dealing with the supplying/fitting independant anyway.
Probably best to check with either AM or whoever your warranty is with though.

Remember there are three cost elements to take into account. 1. Labour (not insignificant), 2. the driven plate (relatively cheap), 3. the clutch cover and flywheel (relatively expensive). You will always incur costs for 1 and 2. Usually you will be advised to replace 3, but if mileage is low and these parts are not damaged, they could be re-used with little risk. The extra labour cost of dealing with 3 is small. However if 3 is damaged but not replaced, the risk of incurring all the cost again is present.
If changing to a different type of clutch 1,2 and 3 will be necessary.

This routine applies to any clutch change, but the labour cost associated with the VH cars is relatively high because of their design.

I recently went to David Appleby Engineering near Banbury regarding a clutch, they offer £1,000 for a new clutch plate, other parts may be required once its been inspected.

I found that my V8 did not need a a new clutch as recommended by my local dealer!!! Just a bit more time for clutch learn required!!!

If you need a new clutch the DA guys will give you an honest and economic costing, bit of a rare quality these days!!!!!!
