A few raised eyebrows at yesterdays sale. Memorabilia went well and small items such as a DB MkIII jack went for £750 a bit over its estimate of £80-120. Bond signed photos at £1312 and £1687 from estimates around £400
1960s Rapides at £124,700 and £175,100 show a new enthusiasm for the model
Thought the lovely Drophead DB2 would have done better at £169,500 failed to make its estimate of £180-230,000 Bargain?
The MkIII Drophead project car went for £144,860 looking as though it needed another similar amount to put it in order.
1991 manual Virage £35,650 from estimate of £15-20,000 more new enthusiasm
Could not see why the DB6 Mk II Volante auto at £757,500 was worth nearly £220,000 more than the Mk I manual Volante
at £539,100
Very brave to take on the factory prototype DB5,bit of a wreck, at £393,500 estimate £50-80,000!
Any more thoughts?

Some of the prices that the memorabilia went for was just the result of excessive willy waving. A lot of the stuff was either "Modern" or "Reproduced" but this was ignored by a certain type of bidder who hurled themselves off the cliffs of common sense.
Top Tip: download a picture of Sean Connery. Buy some sort of printed Gold Finger connection off flea bay for £3.75. Photocopy a signature from a book, frame it all and flog it at Bonhams for a grand. Do this 100 times and go buy a DBS.
Good day though, but the drives there and back were the highlights.

Most memorable part of the day was talking to Tom Rollason about the Atom. I had no idea it was so sophisticated and that such a project could be carried out in 1940 at a time when we were under imminent threat of invasion and people were melting aluminium saucepans to build Spitfires. It covered 100,000 miles in the war delivering parts for searchlights apparently.

Think the price difference is purely scarcity - there were only 38 MkII Volante's, against (from memory) 140 Mark I's1960s Rapides at £124,700 and £175,100 show a new enthusiasm for the model

Some of you will remember a similar "bubble" about 20 years ago.
Then prices crashed quite dramatically.
A Classic Aston dealer I was talking to at the auction argues against this, as you would expect, but there was logic to his arguement that neither the Chinese or Russians had got into classic cars yet and once they did they would create further demand on older Astons. Interesting view with I guess the question being will they get into this and when? It may be that they are not even interested in the cars but the investment potential - now that would be a real shame! Then prices crashed quite dramatically.

However these speculative makets are usually a phase in the cyclical nature of business.

I spoke with Tom yesterday and sent him a copy of what you said and the 2 pictures from the other thread. He said you were most kind and he always enjoys talking about cars. Have you got any more pictures of Tom with the Atom ?Fay

I will upload all the ones I took but some are a bit samey.
Thought that the "Aston Martin Heritage" sign could do with a lick of paint, otherwise people might think it representative of the state of affairs there.
Any guesses as to what the Atom will make at the Goodwood Sale?
I will start the ball rolling and say 1.4 million but if the MkIII jack is anything to go by it could be ten times as much!
