On several occasions recently, when inserting the glass key into the ignition docking station (V12 Vantage), it seems to hit a solid barrier about half way, and the only way to get past is to give it a good thwack and force it. Has anyone experienced this issue, and if so, is there a simple solution other than replacing the station (which is a rather expensive option)? It's not a part that I would anticipate wearing out.

I have never experienced that, it doesn't sound right to me. Have you tried the spare key to see if it's the same. I wouldn't be whacking the glass key in case you break it. My glass key now has a number of straight line scratches on the sides, there must be something in there with a burr that has caused this.

Yes - now using the spare key for that very reason. So far, I have been able to thwack past the obstacle when it occurs but I am concerned that at some point, it will no longer function. My local AM dealership has quoted CAN $2,200 to replace the docking unit, which to me seems exorbitant. I have never owned a car that has such a fundamental vulnerability associated with starting the engine........l

Take the unit out, have a good look at it and maybe lubricate it a bit. If that fails, look for a second hand unit from a breakers. It cant be very difficult to change, as there is no steering column lock etc.

I have changed one on a Mercedes and it wasn't complicated.

I think Aston missed a trick here, keyless entry with an illuminated starter button would be so much less fiddly.

You're not wrong there.......I would LOVE that option instead of the stupid glass key (sorry, Emotional Control Unit) !

When my Mrs first saw the key, she said yep, very nice.....however seeing as you have no way of attaching your keys to it, how long will it be before you loose it (and no i don't want a 100 key pouch)...... smile

Glass Key - Looks like a thing of beauty but is about as practical as a boat in a desert.
