A young Romanian colleague recently joined my team at work and was informing me of the delights of her homeland. Anyway got talking cars and roads, especially about the unpronounceable one that the Top Gear guys loved.
So got to chatting about how to enjoy the road...a 3 day drive from UK and then back again (which is appealing, but I'm somewhat time limited for boys events) so we looked at car hire. My colleague found this website and a Lotus Elise for €70 per day and a drive down that road intrigued me. They also have a V8V for hire. More expensive, but not ridiculous...

Has anyone taken their Aston this far out into Eastern Europe?

If I had the time, I would definitely fancy it. So I am considering a fly-drive.

Just thought I would share...

I contemplated this a few years ago
Actually Clarksons DBS from that trip is currently up for sale wink
I did a bit of research and found there wasn't much else in the way of decent roads
So a fly drive specifically for this is probably the best choice

Pontiac Solstice caught my eye!

But to answer the question, never done it and I guess the biggest suspicion would be the usual scam where they claim every blemish on the car was caused by you and chip you for it on the credit card afterwards (there was some scam going in the UK doing this a few years back). They may offer insurance to cover everything. Otherwise it looks just like a hire car company with a few interesting models

You're right, it's just a hire company with a few interesting models. And I'm sure there are others. This was just one she came across. But it could be a route to go there in future. She was telling me that there are also other roads as good as or better around there and, indeed, there are also some terrible roads...

I think I'll probably go for my first trip next year with a bog standard hire car, do a family tour to recce the place and do a few of the sights (Dracula etc) as it does seem to have a lot to offer in the way of scenery (including plenty of mountains and UNESCO sites). And it's far less congested than Western Europe!

The scams are always a concern however. My (trusted) colleague was offering to make my booking also, in part for the same reasons. Safer if it's seen as a local etc...

One for the future...
