07 V8V - Dimming of dash lights with headlamps on

My car doesn't seem automatically to dim the dash backlights and nav display when the headlights are on. I can do it manually by twiddling the knob next to the light switch but this works independently of the light switch so needs turning back up again in daylight. I expected it only to control dash brightness when the headlamps are on.

Something wrong?

Nope - my '07 V8V does the same.
Renault and others were doing this several years earlier - I think Ford decided to penny-pinch here.

Talking of penny-pinching, why on earth did they use transfers on the instruments, the ones on the fuel gauge catch the light and show up as shiny squares every time I get in

Hadn't spotted the gauge transfer issue - yet! It's been too dark in there
