Vanq2 depreciation
Discussion
Sorry folks, another crystal ball thread. I'm in the fortunate position to be able to buy a car for around 150k. Whilst that sounds nice (and it is), I'm not rich enough to not worry about depreciation on whatever I buy.
I'm looking at a few things - 12c Spider, 458 and a Vanq 2. My heart is with the vanq2. When it first came out, I thought it was an absolute thing of beauty and when I saw it in the flesh, it had the presence to go with the look. However, I'm slightly nervous about the depreciation on the vanq2 - I'm a little less worried by the 12c spider or 458 because I think they'll hold onto a lot of their value for longer(low supply of 12c spiders, issues fixed, will start to become loved more and gain value as a result. 458 - Fez prices have been fairly solid of late, their older cars are going up in value, at the 458 end they'll hold steady due to higher priced older V8s etc). All that being said, the vanq2 appears to be doing OK. Vanq1 prices have gone up and so there may be a 110 to 120k floor to vanq 2 values.
Thoughts? I can' afford to splash out 150k and be down 50k very shortly after (OK, I could, but it'd be a tough one to explain to the OH and would therefore hugely reduce the chance of upgrading in a few years).

I suspect the major improvements to the 2015MY will hit values of the older models in the future. Conversely, the early 2015s will probably hold their value significantly better much like the early 4.7 V8Vs have done. 15 months on and it would appear that I would pay the same for my 2009MY V8V now as I did then.
So, if you can wait 18 months or so, a 2015MY Vanquish may give you the stability you crave. Then again, crystals balls are even less reliable than Porsche engines.

Vanquish and 12C/458 are very very different type of cars.
Vanquish is a heavy grand tourer that souds and looks fantastic. Slow un-engaging paddle gearbox, very thick glass means you cannot hear the beatiful noise from the inside.
The 12C and the 458 are more supercars and driver's car. Although comfortable, and the 12C can be used as a daily drive, it is not the same ambiance and feel as the Vanquish.
I guess you will have the hard task to drive them all and decide what meets your needs
Depreciation wise, 12C has done (hopefully) all its depreciation now. As you say, 458 are holding strong but as always with Ferraris until the new models come out. I would be worried about depreciation on the Vanquish but you might be able to get a good deal on a used car seating at a dealership.

Interesting comments. Thanks for the feedback so far guys. Seems like the sensible thing to do is going to be to wait, and I guess there's nothing wrong with running a 430 for another year (as much as I hate waiting for something that I want!). I'm presuming that we're looking at the last current era model range before the new generation of Astons are launhced in the coming year or two, in which case do you guys think the current models will be 'boxed off' and keep their value or will they be affected by the new generation of astons. Another crystal ball question because I guess it depends heavily on how different the new model range will be and whether how well received they are by the market.

Who knows is the answer to that. I'm hoping having a V12V with a manual box that I've got the best last gen V12 and manual so hopefully that'll hold the depreciation off somewhat. If theres an oil crash and £4 a litre prices then its fair to say we're all screwed
Agree that "who knows" is a perfectly reasonable answer. I guess I should qualify my question with "assuming nothing disastrous happens and the economy doesn't tank". We're only talking a 3 year window after all and "the market" for these cars is amongst people on forums like this one so any commenter on here is a potential future buyer or seller.
Think you've hit the nail on the head. If waiting 12/18 months gets you the better version of the car you want them I'd do that. Initially when I was looking at AM's I started looking at 4.3's, then decided to wait to get the 4.7. 10k miles and 18 months later I lost about £400. AM actually advertised it for more than I bought it from them for (probably because it was in better condition at that point
)
All you can do is set yourself up to have the best possible spec / lowest in numbers. Anything after that is left to the elements.

well its a nice dilemma .....The Aston will take the biggest hit......you will always be considered a bit of a knob in the 458 ( just because its a Ferrari ) go with the 12C I'm looking at a few things - 12c Spider, 458 and a Vanq 2. I think you're right about the manual V12V. I'll have one eventually.
Regarding the last bit - we won't all be screwed... some of us work in oil & gas!
The only real way to totally avoid depreciation is to buy classic!

I love your candid down-to-earth perspective on these things! The 12c spider in volcano red looks extremely nice (the 650 spider currently in Knutsford looks the dogs). The Vanq2 is beautiful and has back seats which means my wife + 7 yr old daughter can also get in!Decisions decisions....
Vanquish MKII AM310 will NEVER be a classic, that's for sure.
The MKII will keep on decreasing over the next years... it doesn't bring anything more than the 2013 DB9 which is to me, the best compromise in the modern era Gaydon cars.
The original Vanquish/S (2001-2007) is already a classic, prices have been rising up since 3 years and there are so many reasons for this car to be classic.
Just look at prices on classifieds, the most expensive '07 Vanquish S are at the same level (or even more expensive !) than lowest MKII prices.
Anyway, both cars can not be compared. And it was a huge mistake to re-use the name Vanquish for this car.
12C and 458 are exceptional sport cars, my heart would go to the Ferrari but god, the 12C is unbelievably good.
And they will depreciate much less than Vanquish MKII.

Tricky times looming in your sector now. The commodity price drop has been unusually rapid, and my own understanding is that a major part of the reason, is the success of US shale.
I wish you well.
I expect you have been amused by the idiots who have been saying, "The oil price is down 20%, so why is my petrol only down 5%?"
(For our US friends - total tax on UK petrol is about 80%, and we have even been tricked into paying a sales tax on the petrol tax.)

Yes the back seats are a consideration.......my 5YO can now sit comfortably in the back seat of my DB9 and it is fun to drive somewhere as a family .........but to own a Maclaren 12c would be very cool......owning a Ferrari is not as cool, its a bit obvious .......I have always loved Vanquish 2 since I first saw it but the price will drop......it's why 2 -3 YO Astons are such good value

+1There was a new unregistered 6 speed Vanquish coupe at Stratstone West London a few weeks ago .. £25k off list price shown on pricing information board.
I suspect you could have easily got that to £30k ...
I'd take the Virage Volante over all of them and keep c£50k in the bank. A beautiful car that is much ignored in my book. If you want a Supercar, however, then save up for a 458 Speciale!
In reality though, you've got time and cash on your side, so there's clearly no rush. The McLarens might be a little immature, in so far as I'm unsure as to any emergent issues that may have affect them, so waiting a little longer might be of use. I think you've done the Ferrari, so maybe the Vanquish could be for you. Mind you, would you be wishing you'd bought the Vanq2.2, as that is, I think, a much better car than the 2.1. I'd hate for you to be unhappy in it!!
