I was just vacuuming the inside of the car this morning and noticed that the passenger floor mat was wet. I removed it, and found that the padding underneath was quite sodden as was the white material shown in the picture. I'm drying everything out at the moment.

Are there any common reasons why this may happen aside from the usual leaving the window down?

I park outside on a driveway that is quite sloped. The car faces uphill and I had noticed that quite often when I open the door in the morning a lot of water flows out of the drain hole on the door. I don't have it on the driver side so maybe I should always open both doors and drain them prior to driving? In any case I am going to do this, and also reverse into my drive so that the water runs out of the drain holes more naturally.

I believe there are some drains that run to the underneath of the car, quite possible one / more is blocked - someone in the know will be able to confirm, could just be a pipe cleaner job to clear. Another possiblity is that the door rubber around the shut is loose, it should be pretty obvious if thats the case - it will need re-gluing or replacing. Given that just above the white matting you have photographed there are most of the electrics / fuses for the majority of the cars systems, if the water was coming through there you'd already have a very unhappy car I expect.

Do you have condensation in the VIN compartment of your windscreen or lots of condensation inside your windscreen?

If you do then you have a leaking windscreen due to failed bonding somewhere on the passenger side of the windscreen, water will run down behind/next to the glovebox and end up in the foot well like what you have. The only way to fix it is to get the windscreen taken out and re-fitted. This will cost you around 100 quid +VAT from a good windscreen fitter.

There are sill drain plugs at the back of the underside of the sills, just in front of the back wheel arch. If they are blocked, you will hear water wishing sounds when you drive the car but should not cause water in the foot well.

My guess would be a leaking windscreen.

I just got the windscreen on my V8 Roadster removed and refitted two weeks ago £110 + VAT.
The bonding at the drivers side vertical edge was gone and as already stated the way to check for a leaking windscreen is condensation/water in the VIN number window and condensation at the bottom corners of the inside of the windscreen.

Thanks for the helpful replies and happy new year. I've checked the vin plate window and there's no condensation in there. I then had a really good look at all the door seals. I think that the passenger door seal wasn't quite in correctly as it wasn't lined up like the driver side one. I gave it a bit of a whack and now it looks better plus no new water in yet. I'll keep monitoring it. Thanks again.
