Based on my basic knowledge our car tax is worked out by the emissions each car has....bigger the engine the more it costs?

However after my mot today my emissions are as follows
CO....max0.2%....... My reading....0.00%
HC.....max 200ppm......my reading....6ppm
Lambada...0.97-1.03....my reading....1.01

Natural idle test....
CO....max 0.30%.....my reading....0.01%

Why the fk am I paying 500 sovs a year?......when a fking Pruis hybred piece of st on fast idle is double my figures and those tree hugging s pay fk all.....

Rant over

My Aston Martin produces less pollution each year than my daily driver, which has a low ‘road tax' charge.

It seems there is no science involved in taxation.

A big engine, or a high value terraced house (now called a mansion), simply means tax them more until they go abroad. - smile

Agree it is bad, but imagine if you had your DBS in Italy where they have super bollo (supertax) would be around 3k! So not so bad then.

Efficiency can be the same for two cars, but the bigger motor emits more 'parts' in a given time (10 minutes at idle, for example), does it not?
Hence it emits more total bad parts than the smaller engined car of the same efficiency.

because VED tax is based on CO2 emissions (not CO or HC)

We then include the annoying part of the equation.

Small engine car = 15,000 miles per year.
Aston Martin = 3,000 miles per year.

The Dartford Crossing (Thames Bridge) now has tolls operated by number plate recognition. So, with total taxation receipts from car tax declining, it probably won't be long before motorway tolls are introduced. What are the odds, that it will be in addition to car tax, rather than in place of it?

Car manufacturer bench tests the engine witnessed by an independent inspector
That is the figure that becomes written in stone frown

CO and CO2 are not the same thing.

As I understand it Carbon monoxide is an indication on how poor the burn is (which is why you can buy CO alarms and people die when their boiler goes wrong) and carbon dioxide is a measure of how much you burn which is roughly in line with fuel economy They only test you have a clean burn.

This is ultimately why the car tax scheme should be scrapped and the costs added to fuel. That way you pay the more you use.
The issue is that politically rising fuel costs has a significant effect, so won't be popular. But it would mean that despite where in the eu a vehicle is registered, a charge for use of uk roads would be fair to all, and based on actual usage. It just needs a brave govt to make the change.
