Replacement Airbags
Discussion
First time poster and apologies if this subject has been raised before (although I couldn't find any reference in a search).
My '06 Vantage is just back from its nine year service and I've just noticed from the service schedule that "After 10 years from the date of vehicle registration, all airbag units and seatbelt pre-tensioners must be replaced. To ensure this is completed correctly and safely, this work should be carried out by your Aston Martin dealership".
Although this is a year away for me, I contacted the good folk at McGurk who quoted me £3,500 for this work. Ouch!
As the Vantage was only launched in '05, the first models won't yet have reached this point - although they soon will. Are any owners planning on getting this done? Do the service schedules for the DB9 and DB7 have similar requirements? As every ignition start includes a diagnostic on the airbags, is this just another AM money-spinner? Will not having the work done affect the resale value?
Lots of questions I know. But then, three and a half thousand is lots of pounds.

I was never aware of it being a requirement/recommendation on any of my previous cars (including Merc SL; Audi TT and S4; or 911), so not sure if this is just an AM thing.
I am sure I have seen this on Audis I have owned in the past but as I did not own the cars past 3-4 years old then not my concern. Will be interesting to know if this is/will be an MOT thing or whether airbags can simply be deactivated/removed (and I guess there may be insurance implications to this). My point being at £3.5K this could see many cars scrapped at ten years old if the work is mandatory.
He's right. I just checked in my service schedule and it clearly states the airbag units and seat belt pre-tensioners "must be replaced".
Seems it's a precaution

I have read on several occasions about this 10 year rule, and in connection with several different manufacturers.
Wonder if newish cars are programmed to indicate a fault, and therefore fail an MoT, if these items have not been replaced after 10years.
OP, you will be able to tell us in 12 months time.
One of my daily drivers is now 19 years old, and has the original single airbag. Whether the bag would work in a collision, who knows, but remember, I don'think the Aston Martin GT3 race cars have any airbags at all.
sooty61, thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that article. It does give some comfort.
Jon39, the warning lights include an SRS/airbag fault symbol. Worth keeping an eye on this to see if it's triggered on or around the ten year anniversary.
I have also just spoken to the service manager at my local authorised dealer. He advised that he has never replaced the airbags in 20 years of working there and they certainly wouldn't insist on it. To quote "it's your car, it's your money".

Hi, around the same figure from memory. Certainly more than £3k, I'll try to dig it out if I can find the service receipt later.
I was told it was pretty imperative to get the seatbelts and airbags replaced on the 10 year service. Also, it took ages as they had to wait for them to be shipped in. Car was with the garage for a good couple of weeks.

Hmm, if it was a common service item, then they would have had stock. Methinks you got talked into something you did not need and the dealer made a pretty penny thanks.I was told it was pretty imperative to get the seatbelts and airbags replaced on the 10 year service. Not having the airbags replaced will certainly not affect the vehicles resale value. I'll wager that AM would not replace them at 10 years on an approved used car.
Are there insurance implications of not having the airbags replaced as recommended by the manufacturer? AM must recommend it for some safety reason so is it worth paying the money to make sure the airbags go off in the event of a serious accident?
For a Volante, do the rear roll- over bars need to be looked at too, or do they operate on a different principle?

Just go over a humpback bridge too fast whilst still in warranty and get that done for free For a Volante, do the rear roll- over bars need to be looked at too, or do they operate on a different principle?

Just googled up this old thread - £3.5k seems positively cheap compared to the €12,000 (yes, I did type TWELVE THOUSAND there, even in euros that's a heap of cash!) Aston Martin in Bordeaux just quoted me for this! As I pointed out to them, "I can tell you what they can do with their recommendation and even if the airbags don't fire when I crash I intend to be going so fast it will make no difference and I'll shake hands with St. Pete at the pearly gates in a ball of flaming metal and fuel" ;-)
Having since recovered from the shock and some more expedient googling seems that it's all totally pointless anyhow and a bit of a cash-grab.
