Murco vs Shell V Power.
Discussion
Grumpy old man get it off your chest time. I have just been to fill up with Super Unleaded at my local Murco, normally one of the cheapest in the area. I foolishly assumed that the total cost would be reflected in the recent reductions that we have been seeing but glanced at the cost per litre hallway through the fill and saw that it was still lurking at 129.9 p against the normal unleaded price of 105.9 p.
I asked the man behind the jump why the price was so high and he told me it was nothing to do with him, not unreasonably. I asked him to let his manager know that until some answer was forthcoming that I would be using Shell V Power, a mile up the road and 15p per litre cheaper.
It appears ludicrous to try to justify a differential of 24 p on the two types of fuel when just up the road, V Power is much cheaper.
So if you want top end petrol, avoid Murco on the Farnhan Road and go to Shell at the top of Folly Hill.
There, rant over and much better.
PS my car has been fettled and does need high Octane fuel before someone starts blathering on about anti knock sensors etc.

Might I suggest you pour yourself a large glass of vino Nicholas I asked the man behind the jump why the price was so high and he told me it was nothing to do with him, not unreasonably. Is there any advantage of filling up with super unleaded from time to time?
Some 15 years ago I heard it could be beneficial as it contains more cleaning agents but not sure if it's still the case.
My understanding is that the Vantage engine knows what grade of fuel it has been fed and adjusts itself accordingly with slightly more power coming from the higher grade fuel. I only run super unleaded although I guess only a dyno could tell the difference in power between grades. Some 15 years ago I heard it could be beneficial as it contains more cleaning agents but not sure if it's still the case.
Been thinking about that myself and have been feeding the V12 with 99 RON since fuel came down so much. I wont get any performance benefits as it is designed to run on 95 RON only (later cars may have knock sensors and can maybe adjust 'up') but just hoped it was a more 'premium' product with extra snake oil in it?
One of the other differences between normal and super is the degree of ethanol in the mix, as well as the other additives. Apart for the possible impact on internal rubber and seals on much older cars, the bigger impact is on engines that are not run up that often. If anyone has ever left ordinary unleaded in say a mower or other garden tool over the winter, you may note it leaves a kind of shellac or varnish behind as it evaporates. That can gum up the fueliing system and lead to engine warning lights etc on some cars as, for example, the pertrol evaporates at different rates in each of the two fuel pumps creating the pressure difference that can triggers a dreaded warning lamp. So, if you use your Aston sparingly through the winter it can be beneficial to leave it with a tank of super rather than ordinary. I try to run mine up every couple of weeks to avoid excessive evaporation and to keep the oil, AC compressor etc in trim too.

Good job you weren't anywhere near him at this petrol station
Oh hang on........

He was particulary grumpy that day. Although he wasn't moaning about the cost of the fuel

But I do believe they actually do more to the gallon than V8's - honest!
