With yet another snow storm bearing down on us tonight, I wanted to stretch the DB9's legs while it was clear and dry. Stopped for petrol and had this interaction.

Guy: Is that a Chrysler?

Me: No, it's an Aston Martin.

Guy: Oh, is that like a Bentley?

Me: No, AM is its own brand.

Guy: Oh, I was just going by the badge.

A nice fellow who meant well and commented on how beautiful the car was, but I'm always amazed at how little people know about the AM brand here in the states.

I'm always surprised about how much is known about Britain in the States... or Europe!

Haha I had a similar incident. About a year ago two young lads (around age 10 I guess) approached me in the supermarket car park.

The first lad said "Excuse me, is that a Chrysler or an Aston Martin?"

I smiled and said "It's an Aston Martin"

The lad then said "YESSSS!!!" jubilantly shaking his fist, and turned to his mate and said "See, I told you!"

For a brief moment I did think to myself "Chrysler - WTF?" but then realised the badge is quite similar, even if the cars aren't!

I find it staggering that someone can know enough about cars to realise the shape of the Chrysler badge but so little that they think any shape Aston might be a Chrysler ! That's not to say I don't believe you, just that stories like these never cease to amaze me

On the flip side, I'm so proud of one of my mate's kids. He's 4 years old and he already recognises the make of a car from the car key. He started frantically pulling on his mum's hand in costa coffee the other day - when his mum asked him what he was so excited about, he pointed at a man sat on his own and said 'that man drives a mini' - he'd spotted the car key on the table. As I say, really proud !

I was in LA and was asked by an older couple whether the Virage I had at the time was made by Ford or GM. When I replied neither, it's an Aston Martin they said Aston who? I replied Aston Martin and then explained that it was an independent manufacturer from the UK. They then asked me again whether Aston Martin was owned by Ford or GM and where in the US it was manufactured. I gave up at that point...

To be fair they did tell me it was the most beautiful car they'd ever seen so I was happy with that smile

I'm not surprised. The general public knows very little about exotic cars. I used to get annoyed when people would ask "Lotus? Who makes that?" until I came up with the perfect answer: "the British!". smile same goes for my "Austin Martin" biggrin
