I only clean it when noticeably dirty and then I use a specialist cabrio roof cleaner and a soft brush. I use a jet wash on the rest of the car but just flood the roof to wash off the detergent, I never blast it off with any power from the jet wash.
I find that using the specialist BMW roof protector as mentioned earlier makes cleaning far easier and less frequent.

I'm going to be covering this in the upcoming video, but in to your question, there are a few owners that do their roofs themselves, but generally, most get it done for them.
There are two ways of doing it. You can either spray it on or you can use a brush to put it on.
Spraying it on is easier, but you don't get the even coverage as using a brush. Plus there is a chance the protectant will go over the car. With a brush, you use a lot more product, but the protectant soaks into the fabric and lasts longer. Plus, you don't get it all over the car. However, it does take about an hour to do the roof and you have to be careful of runs if you put too much on the side.
As for product, I used to use 303 fabric guard, but now use gtechniq I1. A few on here might be along to comment. Whatever you go for though, make sure you work on a perfectly dry roof and in a well vented place. They both smell very strong, especially the gtechniq one.
