Getting an inspection on a private sale?
Discussion
Most of them will do an inspection but you might want to get contacts and quotes from a number of different garages when I got my V8V the price for an inspection was much the same. The reason for a number of options re inspections is that they increase the cost due to travel time. I looked at cars in Dorset, Kent and the got one in Warwickshire so used the garage nearest the car I bought the others I discounted.
Dealer inspection has many tick boxes. But none for smoky exhaust, cylinder compression tests, straight chassis, matching paintwork, shut lines, little end noise, tappet noise etc Do correct me if I'm wrong but its a bit more of a sales tool... May be less relevant on younger cars...but...

I've not seen a dealership inspection report but occasionally see a Davron one if David brings one to finish at home. They cover: anything on the car which is not original/after market modifications, anything missing, anything marked/deterioration/corrosion/damage/rust. Check oil pressure, air conditioning etc.
You can get an idea of what needs fixing now and what can be done later, along with some idea of price. It helps to identify if it's more work than you want to do so you can walk away and find a better car elsewhere. It also saves you getting a nasty surprise when you take what looks like a sound car in for a small bit of work and get shown those not so obvious problems that those who work with Astons everyday know to look for.
With an inspection report, you can use it to negotiate price.
Obviously I have a connection to Davron as David is my husband but other than having the fun of driving the cars, I don't have any involvement with the day to day stuff, being an NHS worker myself.
David and Nigel are always happy for anyone to drop in and have a look around and can probably show you reports they have done. You can then assess what you think of their knowledge and way of working before deciding if you want to use them. If you are around on the second Tuesday of the month, we have the local area meeting at the Fox & Goose pub at Coombe Bissett - you can ask other Members for their views on the company.
Hope that is of some help.

Guys here are couple of links to a main dealer 140 point inspection doc and what they cover and report back on.
You'll note the exceedingly evenly worn tyres...and no comment if they are the 'right' spec/size. Also the pad depths do not remotely reflect the accurate measurements Stratstone gave for all at these at the service a few weeks later. There was no comment or feedback to me on the car and all I got was a manky photocopy despite asking for better.
