V8V New Owner Questions :D
Discussion
Hi All..!
Also posted this in the BR sticky, sorry about the cross-post!
New AM V8V 4.7 Manual MY11 owner here - had the car just less than a week & loving it. Wanted to cover a few topics, if that's okay?
1) Car 'character' - does everybody have the misting headlamps, grinding noise on low speed pull away in first (clutch fully engaged), engine quite tappety (with a regular lower click every 4 seconds or so) even after a long run ? I can live with these things but if there's anything to improve them, or they're a sign of a fault - please let me know
2) Boot ingress kit - for the cost (seem to remember reading approx 30gbp) it sounds worth it. Is it an easy self fit? Any guides?
3) What's the latest 'volvo' SatNav update DVD part number please? I hear that one should of just been released for this year.
4) Iron parts in the engine bay showing oxidisation - dealer says normal - is it?
5) Clutch life - the car was 8400mi when I collected it and the clutch seems fine on it. The bite is taking a bit of getting used to (especially hill starts with the fly-off handbrake and the very high reverse gear). Any tips or tricks to prolong the life of the clutch? I know the car can move away on just the bite but how many revs are you guys using to pull away smartly? Without causing damage to the clutch.
6) The car from a main dealer and covered by the official AM used car warranty - do you know what affects this in terms of upgrades? Headers/cats/intake etc?
7) Given the noises mentioned in point 1, would an port and balance be beneficial? I was the video of the BR engine with the 50p balanced on it and fully expect mine would throw the coin off (I've just to actually check). The smooth engine after this light engine work appeals to me but how much does it cost?
8) BR airbox mod or GT4 style cone filters? Which would you recommend and why?
Sorry about all the questions, I've read through a lot of this thread and can't see answers to the above so if they have already been asked please excuse me.
Much appreciated,
Paul

misting headlamps - keep the lights on, if its really bad get some silica packs and put them in the rear of headlight for a while. Not sure about others
2) Boot ingress kit - for the cost (seem to remember reading approx 30gbp) it sounds worth it. Is it an easy self fit? Any guides?
yes, easy, self explanatory when you get it, just sticks on and works ok
3) What's the latest 'volvo' SatNav update DVD part number please? I hear that one should of just been released for this year.
Dunno, will watch that one for my own update
4) Iron parts in the engine bay showing oxidisation - dealer says normal - is it?
Yes, I would say so, mine have been going that way for years, especially if car lives outside and is daily driver
5) Clutch life - the car was 8400mi when I collected it and the clutch seems fine on it. The bite is taking a bit of getting used to (especially hill starts with the fly-off handbrake and the very high reverse gear). Any tips or tricks to prolong the life of the clutch? Just replaced mine on manual at 74K miles. Dont use any revs at low speed, in reverse just take foot off and let the anti stall work, no need for revs. Dont hold on clutch on hills, get used to the handbrake. Dont leave in gear when sat in traffic
6) The car from a main dealer and covered by the official AM used car warranty - do you know what affects this in terms of upgrades? Headers/cats/intake etc?
Dunno

dunno
8) BR airbox mod or GT4 style cone filters? Which would you recommend and why?
never bothered, doubt you will notice it on its own other than more noise.

I HAVE A 4.7 BUT ITS A 2009 AND A EX-FACTORY CAR BUT I DONT HAVE MISTED HEADLIGHTS. SOME IT HAPPENS, SOME IT DOESNT. YES THE ENGINE CAN SOUND TAPPETY. NOT SURE ABOUT YOUR GRINDING NOISE. ASTONS CAN SOMETIMES SOUND AGRICULTURAL DARE I SAY IT!!
2) Boot ingress kit - for the cost (seem to remember reading approx 30gbp) it sounds worth it. Is it an easy self fit? Any guides?
SURPRISED IT HASNT BEEN DONE ALREADY IF YOU HAVE WARRANTY.
3) What's the latest 'volvo' SatNav update DVD part number please? I hear that one should of just been released for this year.
DONT KNOW SORRY.
4) Iron parts in the engine bay showing oxidisation - dealer says normal - is it?
YEP. UNLESS YOU BOTHER TO CLEAN IT THEN YOU WILL GET IT. NOT SURE IF IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN OR OUT OF A GARAGE.
5) Clutch life - the car was 8400mi when I collected it and the clutch seems fine on it. JUST TO CORRECT YOU, ITS NOT A FLY-OFF HANDBRAKE. ITS DESIGNED LIKE THAT SO YOU CAN GET IN. BUT AS SOMEONE HAS SAID, USE IT RATHER THAN RIDING THE CLUTCH. I THINK WITH ALL CARS YOU GET THE SWEET SPOT TO PULL AWAY. DRIVE IT UNTIL YOU NEED A NEW CLUTCH THEN GO FOR THE AFTER-MARKET ONES FROM BR OR DAE.
6) The car from a main dealer and covered by the official AM used car warranty - do you know what affects this in terms of upgrades? Headers/cats/intake etc?
MINE IS ON ASTON WARRANTY BUT I WAS EARLIER THIS YEAR GOING FOR 200 CEL CATS. NOW ASTON ALSO FIT QUICKSILVER EXHAUSTS AS ASTON WORKS SO I THINK THEY WOULD BE A LITTLE SYMPATHETIC. DEPENDS REALLY, LEATHER TRIM FAILS IN THE CAR BUT YOU HAVE 200 CEL CATS.....I DONT THINK THEY WOULD MOAN TOO MUCH THAT YOUR LOUD NOISE CAUSED THE TRIM TO FALL AWAY. ALSO DEPENDS HOW GOOD A RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH THE DEALER. I GET ON REALLY WELL, DONT MOAN AND PAY MY WARRANTY.ITS IN WORKS TO GET SOME TRIM REPLACED NOW AND I GET WELL LOOKED AFTER, ILL LEAVE IT AT THAT.

DONT KNOW BUT I DONT THINK IT NEEDS IT.AFTER ALL ITS A V8 SO ITS A MORE BALANCED ENGINE ANYWAY.
8) BR airbox mod or GT4 style cone filters? Which would you recommend and why?
ITS DOWN TO BR OR DAE AS THEY OFFER THE CHOICE RESPECTIVELY. IF YOU DONT WANT TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR "MODS" WITH THE WARRANTY SIDE OF LIFE THEN DONT BOTHER WITH EITHER AND JUST DO CATS.
Sorry about all the questions, I've read through a lot of this thread and can't see answers to the above so if they have already been asked please excuse me.

Glad you are enjoying your car. Having owned a 4.7 for several years, the excitement continues.
I can only add to a couple of your queries.
Grinding noise at low speed. This is heard on many of the cars. It seems wrong to call it normal. Explanation is something to do with the carbon fibre torque tube vibrating. I try to minimise this by a touch of throttle if possible.
Tappety sound. Yes, I queried this when I first had the car. The dealer said it was normal, but I am still not sure. At startup the engine runs very quietly, but is sometimes rattely at tickover when hot. Perhaps BR will answer your other post about this matter.
74,000 miles for a clutch gives us hope. It is definitely mainly the driver, but you might have read the moaning when they start slipping at 15,000 miles. Of course, those of us who buy used, can always say someone else shortened the life. -

I haven't heard of anti-stall before. I stalled a lot before getting used to the car.

How can someone with the wherewithal to own an AMV8V not know that it's "should have" and not "should of"? PLEASE tell me that this is an honest mistake and you do know better.SHUDDER

Pedant bell end. Spell check that why don't you.
It's was neither pedantry, nor was it a spelling issue. My point was that this kind of chavism is not becoming of an Aston owner. If the OP had been discussing his new Focus RS, I wouldn't have even questioned it.Knobhead is one word no?

I cannot work out if you're just playing or being serious........ the former I hope as its quite amusing, however if you're serious?!....... just glad this doesn't seem to be the norm for Aston owners as I certainly wouldn't want to be tarnished with that brush and the worry of that could spoil my newly found Aston ownership experience a little. Anyway going back to my belief / bubble where I believe everyone looks at Aston owners as cool, 007 types not toffee nosed, they believe everyone is beneath them types

I'm new to Aston Martin ownership so I've been lurking around here for a few weeks, coming from Porsche and Ferrari's I've been surprised how polite and helpful everyone is to one another on here, however there's always one pretentious dick 'ed to spoil the party... please tell me you're messing around Sushifiend? P.S I still have my Mk1 Focus RSSHUDDER

When taken in the context of Mr Gould's typical comments, Sushifiend's posting is positively benign !!!
Furthermore, he does touch upon a wider issue of Vantage ownership and chavism, implying that they fit together like a shell suit and a curly wig.
Was the Cygnet introduced so that Vantage owners might feel better about themselves?

I am messing around. Usually I never say on the internet anything I wouldn't say to someone's face, and it's true I'd call myself a tool if I didn't know better. I will happily admit that I did think what I wrote though - usually chavspeak doesn't go well with an Aston and it's very un-007. However the rest of the OP's post was well formulated and very un-chavvy. Apologies to the OP and anyone else I may have offended.Edited by kbooker on Monday 28th September 15:45
