Hi guys.

Some help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if it's been done before but other posts didn't quite give me what I needed, especially Around service costs.

Long term 911 owner and everyday driver over last 12 years. Noting to fancy just a 993 cab and 2 x 996 cabs. Still love them - amazing cars. They still make me smile daily.

I live overseas but I am moving back to the UK in 2 months and am looking to spend £35-45k on a Cab. It will be a 997 cab - or a DB9 cab! My head says stay with the 911 as I know what I'm in to. BUT I would love to try an Aston. Must have 4 seats. Looks like it will be a 2006-2008 plate DB9.

I would LOVE some advice.

- are the DB9s of that age joy to drive still ? I know it's not going to have the point n squirt of the 911 but it's not exactly like I'm used to a Turbo or GT3 - to be honest it's very difficult to drive the 996 to its limits living in a major city. Neither am I any Nigel Mansel if I'm honest - I just a regular driver who likes a nice car!

- are the service costs similar to a 911, ie can I take it to an Indy, or does it need to be Aston and are they then crazy money?
- is it a solid car at that age, or a car to avoid ?
- is it a daily drive like a 911? (not far - I won't do more than 12,000m a year?)
- any other thoughts ???

Thanks guys - really appreciate any advice.

Look forward to reading the replies smile

Cheers

Dan.

When you say it must have 4 seats that sounds a bit worrisome. I hope you mean to carry legless midgets or the like, not bipods.

I used to drive Porsches. Great cars i liked the 964 the most of them all. Porsche is a great car but it's not a Aston. Owning a Aston is something very special. It is tough to explain to non Aston owners. Yes the 911 are great if i would buy one it would be the 996 GT3 RS. But they are going for astronomical prices these days. But now owning a DB9 i would not go back to to Porsche. All the new models look the same and i do not have that special feeling every time i drive my Aston. If i could afford it it would buy a DBS my ultimate dream car!

Thanks for the great response. I have no doubt they are special - amazing looking cars with incredible pedigree. But if every time it needs a service or a little work done I am in for a heart attack it's not manageable
For me. I can run my 911 for BMW costs - can tell same be said for a DB9 these days ?

Interested in your view ?

For me the db9 (coupe) is not more expense then my Porsches. I just did a 9 year annual service and costed me $695. (for whole year). The db9 needs only a annual service. I do not drive that much maybe 4k a year. The only extra expenses i had was tires and brakes pads. Also had a throttle body replacement that's it. With he 911 i had very similar maintenance. What every other Aston owner wil tell you. Get a PPI and make sure the car has a solid history. Then you should be ok.

Very help - thanks. From reading that it seems an Aston is a very viable affordable alternative. I test drove a Vantage a couple of years ago and enjoyed it immensely but it's the DB9 I've always loved.

Thanks.

The problem you will have is finding an Indy in your region. Astons have sold in vey small numbers compare to Porsche

Oh and make sure you get any car inspected by an Independent Specialist.. McGurks or Bamford Rose in the UK are good bets

a DB9 does not have 4 seats that are useable......it will also use 50% more fuel than the 911........but most onlookers will think your a right knob in a 911, they won't think that if you drive an Aston Martin ..........also it is well known fact that your penis grows more if you drive a DB9..........servicing costs will be 25% higher with the DB9........good luck with your choice

I've come from Porsche (9 years with a 964, and five and a half years with a 996 turbo). When I viewed my Vantage I looked at the service records - on average it was costing the previous owner around £800-£900 a year at an AM dealer. So unless he had other bills in between, that seemed very reasonable to me - although it had good years, I reckon the 996 turbo was costing me more than that most years.

I've needed a couple of bits sorted on the Vantage since buying it in May, and used a local independent - it's cost me a few hundred pounds each time including parts, so quite reasonable. My service will be there too, and I don't expect it to be prohibitive (unless I decide I need a clutch).

Good though they are, my turbo never really felt like much of an event to drive to me. The Aston still does, and whereas in previous years the turbo would sit on the drive for most of the winter while I used my Cayenne - this year I find I resent the days that I feel I should use the Cayenne!

Ha ha YES - UK it is, you would not buy an DB9 in Aus - same car would be $200,000 for a 2008 plate......

ONE of the exciting things about moving home is the cost of cars - so cheap compared to Aus. A new 911 here is $310,000!!!!
