Hi guys

I'm going to and view a Vantsge 4.7 tomorrow at an independent.

I already have Grant's book and have made some notes from that.

I was wondering if there is anything else you may be able to impart on what to check?

Thanks in advance!

Exciting times smile

Grants book covers most things, but the additional things I'd check (and some are obvious) are:

1) Check the car has always been serviced on time and by a reputable outfit.

2) Has the clutch ever been replaced.

3) Check VERY close for any pain bubble issues around the door handles and on the wing mirror arms.

4) When were the pads and discs last changed.

5) Glass key condition, they're frighteningly pricey to replace.

6) If it's got a bright finish grill, check for staining as it's a bd to get off....in my experience.

7) Check if all recall work has been done (phone an AM dealer with the VIN number).

8) One other thing is my original 4.7 (2009) suffered from a timing chain cover oil leak. The original owner could have fixed it under warranty and never did, leaving me with a £2k bill (no I didn't pay in the end). I believe that's a fairly common fault on the early cars so you want to be sure it's been addressed.

Feel free to share a link the car in question, i'm sure the friendly folk on here will point out anything that could do with further investigation then.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Hi Ry

Thanks for your pointers. smile

Particularly will check out no. 8 as the car is a 2008.

This is the car in question: http://www.broadoakinternational.co.uk/used-cars/a...

Looking forward to getting a close look on it!

Cheers

I had the timing chain leak fixed on my car, it wasn't £2k though, just a few hours labour built into a service at Indy ...was that done at a dealer ?

Not sure about a few hours labour, half the front of the car needs to be removed as the TC cover needs to be removed and the gasket replaced. The part is peanuts, it was all labour.

Even McGurk quoted me about £1800 from memory (it was years ago so don't quote me on that).

This is an extract from McGurk website:

"This is becoming more of a problem as the cars get older. The gasket that fits between the engine block and timing cover can fail and leak oil. The oil can contaminate the belts and pulleys at the front of the engine (causing other issues), then run down under the car and go from there. It is a big amount of work for a small part. Main dealers will quote £2,500 typically and this is almost all labour. At £80 +VAT per hour we can cut a large slice out of a job like this. As always we will only use Aston Martin parts."

@ OP......either way, make sure it's either been done or that the car isn't having the issue.

Hello and welcome, the only other point that comes to mind is to check the age of the tyres. They may have been changed due to wear but I would not be too surprised if they were the originals. The manufacturers recommend replacement at 5 years as the materials deteriorate so if they are that age I would suggest a deal could be struck. My knowledge of the tyre wall coding re age is limited so google it or someone on here will enlighten you ( and me ).

Ben

Looks a lovely example if the pics are anything to go by. As it is down as being a 2008 car would have expected there to be 7 stamps/invoices for the yearly services if the full AM service history is correct but the ad states 6. Might be my rubbish maths but something to check on.

Ok, must have been a different oil leak I had fixed early on in my cars life then. It was just described as "oil weep from cover"

Ah, now you mention it I do recall AM saying that there was a potential small and big fault (the big one being the TC cover). I was quoted less than £500 to fix the smaller leak if that was the issue, however it wasn't.
