Ooo sir how many miles on the clock? . is that a new exhaust
Discussion
Evening Gents,
Am sold on getting an AMV8 for my next car and was wondering what's considered typical mileage? Am looking at an early car so 8-10 years old (06-08 budget is early 30's) 80k on a 06 for example is only 8k a year which seems quite realistic , however there are some very low mileage cars out there and wondering if anything 70k plus on the clock is an issue?
My mileage is quite low around 4-6k a year as its a weekend car, so whats the view? anything over 60k your struggle to sell? I've always been on thoughts that you should buy on condition and history , however i have little insight into the AM market place and how mileage sensitive it is , I know the F-Car market for example bolts at the sight of anything 4/5k+ a year
Advice is appreciated if anyone can help?
Also with reference to modifications or upgrades, if original Aston parts are used or tuners such as Bamford Rose used is this an issue?
Thanks in advance
- Caterham just sold , Cayman S to go and am in the market place!

Initially I was surprised that my purchase had only covered 8,000 miles in three years. Condition was as brand new, so with over 40% off the initial total cost, I was thrilled.
Now 7 years old, and reached 15,000 miles with no problems at all yet. I make sure that it is never idle for more than three weeks though.
Soon learnt that there is a split ownership with Aston Martins, with many treating as an occasional enjoyment car (some even dry day), and others as a daily driver. This obviously results in varying mileages.
It can be seen that retail prices are boosted by lower mileages, which presumably reflects demand. Really high mileages do put buyers off, probably only because there are many low milers available.
There is a past topic about whether to purchase a nearly 120,000 mile DB9. It turned out that no expense had been spared at all, even changing tyres early at a service, just to avoid the inconvenience of another dealer visit. That buyer was able to buy at a low price, and reported back as being very happy after driving the car a few thousand more miles.
The usual suggestion being to buy on condition, and as close to the specification that you want.
Modified Aston Martins almost always seem to have the modifications removed before sale (judging by this forum). I can remember one exception, where the buyer did want a considerably modified car, but that does seem to be very unusual.

The prices dont seem to be mileage dependent until you get above 50K miles. I personally paid a bit of a premium to get lower mileage but that does not always mean less problems. It needed a couple of warranty issues including a new aux belt doing immediately which I put down to low mileage / use. I bought my V8 to last so thought if I buy very low miles I can then sell with it still low miles. The V8 has timeless looks so mileage is the only thing to judge newer and older cars between

I sold mine with 52k on it, it sold very quickly to the first person who viewed. I'd be looking for condition rather than miles - it's a low stressed engine and if well looked after not much to worry about. As Chris points out above, low use can raise a bunch of issues. The buy-in point for these has been gently shifting upwards from what I can see since I sold 16 months ago, looks like @30k is as low as they're going (or have gone).
Agreed o the £30K mark, there seems to be a price that it is illegal for an Aston to depreciate lower than before it starts to appreciate again.
Worth adding although my low miler has had slight problems HWM have been really good and I still have about 7 months of warranty left. The plan is to drive it as much as possible over the summer to ensure that any further niggles get discovered and ironed out but to be honest its running sweet as anything at the moment.
AM Warranty = Very good

There is a 2007 which has been sat on Autotrader with hight 80s miles since the beginning of the year. From the pictures and descriptions it seems like a great car (top condition, FAMSH, lots of spec), but just doesn't seem to want to sell. It started off at £33k, and I think is now down at £29k.
Might just be the wrong time of the year to sell, but would be annoying if you needed to sell the car quickly. From reading up on it, the Vantage seems to take the miles very well, so if you're happy to accept that it'll take a while to sell, you could get a bargain.

Personally if a 8 year old car had only done 10,000 miles I would be a little concerned. Why so little?
It all depends on service history, where any work had been carried out, and the condition of the car
Maybe its one of 5 cars owned? It all depends on service history, where any work had been carried out, and the condition of the car
I dont usually like cars that have been stored for long periods of time with no use, but cars that have had steady low mileage (check past MOTS and service history) are pretty attractive to me. 2-5k miles a year on an Aston is pretty acceptable i think.

When considering an ultra low mileage car, we probably cannot know the type of use.
Perhaps the car might have done many short trips, where the mechanicals did not reach full operating temperature.
I never use mine for a trip of less than 20 miles, in the belief that everything should by then be hot, and all water vapour should have gone from the exhaust system.
Of course, the visual condition of an entire car, normally gives a clue to how careful the previous owners were.

That has dropped another £500 today- might be worth a nosey if you're comfortable with the mileage.

Thanks guys for the input , I had been interested in the one on PH at the 35k mark with 72k. But the milage worries me :/, but the mods excite me
Its some serious coin to put down and am just not sure ....then 7.2k a year does not seem that much ????? ughghg so confused
These things are all personal taste of course, but you seem to be paying similar money to cars with half the mileage just because of the mods. And the mods will make it appeal to less people just as much as the higher mileage does, so I'd say you'd need to REALLY want that car to pay that price for it.Its some serious coin to put down and am just not sure ....then 7.2k a year does not seem that much ????? ughghg so confused
Regarding modified cars, if you intend to modify a car it is always cheaper to buy one that someone has already done. My V8V had about 12k of modifications fitted when I bought it, and I paid the same price for the year and options as for a standard car:
Wheels
Exhaust
Air intakes
Seats
V12 steering wheel and gear stick
Denison
Suspension
Brakes
If you bought a standard car for say £33k, a full exhaust alone would cost £6k from a reputable firm. I don't doubt that in the event I want to sell my car it will take a while because it is modified. If that situation arises I would probably put the original seats and wheels on, flog the aftermarket bits and end up with extra ££

It's also on auction on eBay:

He's either getting fed up that it's not selling presumably due to the mileage or is getting desperate for it to sell I guess. Will make a nice car for someone as it appears to have been well looked after.
David.
Thanks for the input guys, I decided in the end 70k+ was too many miles for a Vantage at this time in there life cycle with so many good ones out there and I decided to go with a more average 35k mile example with some lovely upgrades, just put the deposit down on her today
Can't wait till I get her will update in due course

I think thats it, looking around the typical AMV8 is anywhere from 30-60k , most around the mid 40-50k mark so anything 70k plus looks "high", the odd thing is this engine will of course do 100,000's of miles but one does need to consider the "if i had to sell" moment and how quickly capital could be recouped. So I went safe with a highly specced 35k one with full AM history.
