I bought my 2005 DB9 in May 2013 when it had covered 16,000 miles with a full AMSH. As the car had 4 previous owners I checked with Bridgemill who knew the car and found no reason not to purchase. The car's now done 22,000miles having just had it's annual service at Bridgemill and I'm now looking into changing it for a different AM so I phoned a couple of main dealers. They were very interested in part exchange, one even asking about a straight purchase for their stock, however, when they asked about the number of previous owners their interest seemed to cool. My car's lived a cherished life and is still in near-perfect condition for its age, so I was a bit surprised by their reaction.

Just wondering whether this is what I should expect from an AM dealer in that in terms of value the number of previous owners outweighs the low mileage, condition and history of the car.

Thanks

The next owner would be No 6 which is high and they would rather take in stock with 2 -3 previous owners .........there are lots of criteria dealers and buyers consider when purchasing a car and the number of former keepers is one of them

Its an interesting point - I too purchased my car from an AM dealership 2 years ago and I am the 7th owner but was told by the dealer that 'prestigious marques' often change hands a lot of times in the early years due to the change of fashion and the owners become bored with them and it was nothing to be concerned with.

As the cars go down the line of ownership, the length of time kept by the owner increases as they have less disposable cash to throw around and they are more of a cherished item to own and admire.

I was also 'informed' that as long as the car is kept with a full AM history, the value of the car is in its condition rather than the amount of owners, and car I looked at was impeccable (and still is).

However I too recently considered a change to a Rapide due to the recent addition of a small person to the family, and the PX value they offered was a little low to say the least.

You can ask a dealer if they will sell it on a commission basis as then they have no risk if its a car that 'sticks', or if your DB9 is that clean, sell it privately as most buyers have done their homework and know what they are looking for (and for £1,600 you can even supply it with an official AM warranty which is what I will propose to do with mine so that there is peace of mind for any potential buyers).

On reflection, they tell you one thing to buy into the car, and say another when it comes to giving you your money back - B*%$!RDS!!!!! punch

Well, I am the second owner of my 2009 DB9V and, whilst it was being serviced at AM Works, I asked if they would be interested in buying it..they said no, as the mileage was over 60k....I am sure if the mileage was 50k+, they would have said the same thing.

As an Sunray said, unfortunately the story they give on selling is different to that when buying.
I guess comes with the territory of being a salesman, and that is regardless if you are selling Astons or Mazdas.

Why don't you advertise to sell privately. That way you will also get phone calls from dealers anyway.

Dear Michael.
As a most cherished customer of my Ladyboys I'm very pleased that you take a more pragmatic view and never care
how many previous " owners " they've had.

Its this whole mileage thing that also bothers me. I try to keep her to 5000 miles p.a. but failed last year by a couple of thousand, which was joyful biggrin Its not a garage ornament and its an expensive item to keep static and underused, but then none of us want to be stung for £10k three years down the line at resale as we hadnt bothered to keep the mileage down by say 6000 miles or 'my overage' of 2000 miles per annum.

I'm hoping my sum is very pessimistic smile

Sunray3006, you're spot-on with the line you were given on purchase, I was told just the same about later owners keeping the car longer and yes, they are just car salesmen and targets are just the same as with any other marque. I may well consider selling privately, where do I find out more about the £1600 warranty?

Give me a bell next time.
Meet up for dinner.....might even let you buy me a drink.
Apologies to OP for going slightly off topic.
As others have commented, when you want to purchase a,say, 3 year old car the dealers say that 3/4 owners is not unusual it is service record that is most important, and then down the line they change the criteria.
However in practice don't most customers want ideally both.
Lowish mileage (not garage queen ), good service record and a couple of owners if they're paying dealer prices.

I passed up a Cobalt V8S about 18 months ago for the very same reason. Price was good.....mileage a little high but still OK.....spec spot on........but I would have been owner 6.........that put me right off i'm afraid.

I'm pretty much instinctively the same - but are we correct Ry?

These are often fully warrantied, lowish mileage, FAMSH cars. They are rarely DD's? They are also a car to suit some people but will definitely not suit all (the weak wink ). Some scratch an itch but then have the funds to scratch the next itch pretty soon...

So is it right we treat a 3 year old 5 owner Vantage as probably a lemon with issues that no one wants to fix or one that hasn't been 'cared for' - despite the FAMSH? If so what is the point of a FAMSH? Or a 140 point check?

Doesn't add up - its a legacy from our Ford Escort days maybe?!

Got my AM from a dealer with all the above intact (2 owners - AM staff and then a lady (WLTM!) but not given a scrap of any owner paperwork such as the ones I build up for her as an assurance for the next owner (if any)...
