He started off looking at the V8 Vantage Roadster but has been put off by the boot space, so he's switched his sights to a DB9.

He's struggling with buying new, although coming round to the idea based on the fact that every time he finds one he likes the look of, he calls up and someone has put a deposit on it, they don't seem to hang around long!

There's no budget as such and he will buy new if he needs to. Stratstone have said there's deals to be done on new too.

My questions are;

- What do we need to look out for when viewing?;
- What are the desirable options?;
- What discounts are generally available on new?

Any other general advice we should be aware of? It'll be a weekend car, so won't do that many miles unless I can get my hands on it...

Finally, if anyone is selling a good condition DB9 Volante (must be facelift) will you let me know?

The boot capacity of a Vantage Coupe is considerably larger than a DB9 Coupe, even though the DB9 is a larger car. It is partly to do with the provision for the tiny rear seats on DB9s. You are referring to the convertible models, which with modern cars of course always house the folding roofs into the boot area.

Your father may well obtain a deal on new DB9, because there are probably some dealer stock cars around. Production of new DB9 cars has already, or will soon be ended.

I've not been to view any with him, as I was away when he was looking. Is it not correct that the boot space in a convertible V8 Vantage is smaller than a convertible DB9? It's down to whether he can fit his golf clubs in as far as I know.

I'm afraid your dad has got his priorities wrong,sod the golf clubs.
The boot space is not great,but as I don't play golf I cannot help you on that.
The DB9V is primarily great for pulling birds,as I can testify.
Albeit having been a male model,comme moi, also helps.

I'm not sure that'll help sell the concept to my Mum to be honest.

Just back from a factory tour at Gaydon and can confirm DB9 is still being produced along with the DB11. Apparently there's been a surge in demand lately for the run out DB9 GT model. Saw them side by side and I must say the DB9 still looks the part, even next to a DB11.

As it's for the "old man" - the DB9 should suit him well hehe

Oh dear me.
As someone that has been honoured it should befall on you not to turn to falsehoods or utter canards.
As a Lordship you must not perpetuate the myth that only old dodderes drive DB9's and especially the DB9V.
The DB9 is arguably the most graceful design of modern Astons,the symmetry of form is as near perfection as possible,and enhances any man's life of whatever age.

Rather than total boot capacity, obviously a set of golf clubs would require sufficient boot width. The DB9 boot may well be wider than the Vantage. At the recent DB11 launch, it was stated, a set of golf clubs does fit in the boot.

Best advice so far... concerning the clubs.

He doesn't want a 911.

When the 'in' jokes about models appear, it might appear odd, particularly to newcomers.

I drive a Vantage, as do the other young members of this forum. smile

Just out of interest is the DB11 being made on the seperate production line? When I was at Gaydon in march one line was running all models inc 9 and the other was being prepared for the 11 only (i was told) Trim shop was making some upholsty at that time for the 11

Yes separate production area for DB11 where a wall had been erected within the factory to hide production from visitors and other workers till the car's unveiling at Geneva when the panels were taken away.

Don't worry about the mentalists in this corner of the forum. They calm down after a while (I think).

I'd take him to a couple of dealers with his golf clubs and try both the V8 and the DB9. There probably won't be much in it in terms of usability.

I would have thought healthy discounts would be available on dealer stock new cars. So if he wants a "standard" type colour scheme, he should be able to get a relative bargain. I would be really surprised if dealers are still taking customer spec orders now that the DB11 is out. Unless the factory have a lot of parts to use up. If they do, I'd again be looking for a big discount.

Has he seen a DB11? If budget isn't an issue, I think he should look at those too (though may need to be more patient).

I couldn't guess what %age he should target. In 2007 I received around 10% off a current model year V8V. Though the car had a lot of options boxes ticked,and back them AM had lost control of the supply/demand equation. That said, the car was still quite new at the time (definitively not the case with the DB9).

Good luck with the search. Encourage patience as this is a great part of the purchasing process.

(911s aren't competitors to Astons if someone wants an Aston. They're more Audi competitors to me).

OP. I've got a DB9 Volante as a courtesy car at the moment and I can tell you golf clubs DO fit in the boot. Mine is just a light carry-bag, but it fits easily. Plus shoes and a couple of squishy bags on top of the golf clubs. You won't get one of the big trolley bags in there. FWIW, I've loved my two weeks in the Aston and would recommend a DB9 Volante to anyone, of any age! I'm 49 and do not own a pair of slippers smile
PS. Had a couple of 911s. The golf clubs obviously have to go in either the front seat or the shelf created when you fold the back seats forward, and for me the rattling of the clubs drove me mad after about 5 minutes. Great car, but not great if you want to carry golf clubs.

Had DB9V for nearly five years and play golf. Clubs do fit in the boot quite happily but if you want to take a trolley with you it needs to go in the passenger seat in a trolley bag.

A 911 is not a better car!
