Hi I am toying with the idea of buying one of these cars
I seem to remember that the early cars had some engine issue that was a design fault later corrected
Can anyone confirm what this is, how / how much to fix / what MY avoided it etc?

EDIT it is the timing chain cover oil leak, was this on certain cars, how much to fix at an indi? Can it be permanently fixed or is it recurring

that was a service item. I had mine done in 2007 and It wasnt more than a few hours. Not worth worrying about and any car you buy now should have had it done. Dont buy a 10K mile 10 year old car that hasnt moved and you should be fine wink

The updated timing cover gasket was supposedly a permanent fix, but 8 yrs and 50k miles after mine was replaced, my timing cover leak returned.

How much did it cost to sort assuming AML didn't help?

AML did the original replacement under warranty so there was no cost. I've heard it's around 3500 USD to fix, almost entirely labor cost. But really it's more annoying than a real problem. I'm not going to repair mine anytime soon. It's a slow seep but not dripping. I'll deal with it when I rebuild my engine in a year or two.

It's a costly repair for sure, but it's not a crippling issue that will prevent you from enjoying the car.
