So I took a rock square on the leading edge of the hood. Left a dent about the size of a quarter. Left a big chip and it looks to me that it's aluminum under there? 2009 DB9 and I know it's a carbon hood as you can see the weave pattern if you really look closely at the right angle. Is there a bit of aluminum along the leading edge? I'd have thought carbon would have shattered or cracked or something.

Perhaps you own a DBS, that one has a carbon bonnet/hood.

Soooooo. I'm actually glad to hear not carbon. And feel a bit stupid. First Aston and swear I had read somewhere that the hood/bonnet was carbon. Even purchased the 'bible' but apparently didn't read it that closely. I must say it's amazingly light for being as big as it is and aluminum. Now I'm really interested in how much lighter a carbon bonnet could actually be.

Thanks for not giving me too much crap on my ignorance.

Yep, fingers crossed should be easier to fix than a carbon fibre one

I weighed my V8V hood a few days ago and it was about 25 lbs, fairly heavy but it's also massive. Heavier than I expected it to be, but the size justifies it. The gas struts help with the wait, so it feels lighter than it is while it's on the car.

Based on comparison of Aluminium density (2.7g/cm3) versus Carbon fibre/epoxy (1.55g/cm3) then if 'like for like' design, you would expect an app. 40% weight saving if you had a carbon fibre bonnet.

CF bonnet is MUCH lighter. You can move it around using two fingers as compared to the alloy version.

On top I would guess you can go with less material; however, part of the weight probably is also the coating so you best go without any color :-)

If I remember correctly a DBS with a few more carbon fibre panels (but not all) is about 60kg lighter than a DB9. Was chuckling as someone tried to pop a magnetic GB sticker on one just before the ferry once smile
