V8 vantage engine ticking

Evening all, was just wondering how many on here have had, or have known a V8V with the ticking sound of a failing bucket shim?

Before I bought the car, I did a whole pile of research, and concluded that it wasn’t the end of the world, and that anything is fixable.


The car is currently with my recently discovered small AM specialist in Harrogate. He’s replaced the shim and the car will be home next week (just waiting on a new rocker cover gasket).

The stories I found online we’re that it was catastrophic and stupidly expensive to repair. I’m getting it sorted for £350!







Cam shaft doesn’t even need taking out, as you can see, the baring caps are removed and the cam is merely moved out of the way.


So if anybody has a ticker, there is hope, and he’s in Harrogate!!

The problem is not a common or widespread issue but a failed bucket shim causing tick is a known about care point and a few on this forum have needed the same fix you report.

An in-situ exhaust cam bucket shim swap is an easy repair, however, it turns into a wallet buster and a big concern if it’s an inlet cam bucket shim because that means engine out of frame job and front cover strip to repair.

So actually there is extreme caution needed if buying a rattler, the distressed price tag would need to cover an engine out job if the rattle was inlet cam, and there is no 100% conclusive test to determine which cam has the out of spec shim other than lifting cam cover and measuring
