I vaguely recall that when I've seen posts about changing the handbrake pads, something else has to be removed before the caliper can be taken off.

I searched last night but couldn't find a single post about it anywhere.

So - what is it that stops me just unbolting the caliper to replace the pads?

I know on electric handbrake cars you need the right diagnostics to wind the pads back, but cant think what you are thinking of for a cable handbrake car? And, if I may, I hate these electric handbrakes - every car behaves slightly differently (my Porsche wont release with a bit of throttle, some put it on when you put in park, others don't - and then I drive the missus Beemer and forget what the pullie uppie stick does)!

With the cable type I know you need the tool to wind the piston in - and I have that. But I'm sure I've seen posts saying that something is in the way of getting the caliper off (I guess stops the bolts being removed).

Did mine last year. No particular problems. Very straightforward.

I replaced rotors about 3 months ago

had to wind the pads back & then grind off some of the lip on the old rotor to get the calipers off

if you remove the cable be careful to leave enough space between the pistons 7 rotors to let you get the cable back on otherwise every time you unsuccessfully try to loop it over the lever the pistons wind the pads in

Ok thanks - did them today.

They were indeed (mostly) straightforward. The top bolts of both callipers were very unwilling to come out - quarter turns and the help of a mallet with lots of nasty noises but no undue effect.

I also found that the calliper rewind tool I had didn't quite fit the Aston. It has a large selection of sizes, and did have one that appeared to be the correct size, but it didn't really want to sit in the holes fully. It went in enough that I could rewind the pistons - they went in very easily - but it did seem like something was slightly non standard about the piston holes.

Still, all sorted now. Off to try some handbrake turns....

Just picking up on this thread - I'm fitting my handbrake calipers to the new discs tonight. Old pads with plenty of meat being re-used.

The calipers are off the car and I'm wondering what the correct procedure is. I was thinking of attaching the cable to the calliper first and then bolting up ?

Appreciate the comment about the pistons coming out at every unsuccessful attempt to hook the cable on, so wanted to avoid this if poss.

From memory Jonny, I'm pretty sure I put the calipers on first before attaching the cable.

In the AM workshop manual for the V12, it shows this as being correct. It also states and stresses that the caliper holding bolts should be re-newed, maybe theyre strech bolts.

All sorted - calipers installed first and then used a hand clamp to compress the sprung lever and slip the cable on to it.
Memo to self - make sure the car is in neutral when testing the handbrake effectiveness....
