I use Motul products in all of my vehicles, but you can use any high-quality oil that meets minimum specifications.

Castrol Edge 10/60 or equivalent is what is quoted in the manual. The issue is that Castrol have changed the branding a few times since the Vantage came out in 2005, and im not sure the owners manuals were updated every time.

...oohhh...its called "supercar" now https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-114352-castrol-edge-s...

Castrol TWS was the original recommendation. AM later switched. The oil brand recommended is mostly meaningless. Oil specs are an engineering requirement. The brand of oil is just a business decision, nothing more.

As mentioned Castrol Edge SUPERCAR 10W60 is what will be put in at the main dealer at a service. wink
Usually available via Eurocarparts for sub £40 for 4 litres, always wait for a discount code *, there is never long to wait. wink
I usually get 3 cans and supply it myself at service time, the remaining left over litre keeps me topped up. rotate

  • * didn't take long, currently down to £33.38 for 4 litres.

Yes I know its just the spec that counts rather than brand....and the branding is different depending on country ...TWS is just the North America version of Edge smile

Which was called Castrol Formula RS in Europe in 2005 in the original Vantage owners manual , which became Castrol Edge Sport by the time the 4.7 user manual was updated....

or any fully synth 10/60 will do just fine smile

Out of interest I asked the dealer for the service records of my 2010 V8 before I owned it - they used different oils...

Dec 2015 they used the Castrol Edge Prof TWS 10W-60
Jan 2017 they used Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 - sounded like an odd choice in Perth Australia, warm climate
April 2018 I DIY'd using Castrol Edge Supercar 10W-60 SN - the new TWS

I'm no oil expert but I'm curious to know if any one brand's formulation is better than another, and why, marginal or not. Maximum spec wink

Any observations from different oils used Telum01 - In general, and and how much carry-over to your catch can?

If flash point (temp it'll burn at) was a correlating factor for the amount vaporised, the Castrol 10W-60 would go first at 204 degC, the Shell Helix Ultra Racing at 215C an the Motul 10W-60 at 232C.

Oils ain't oils but neither is marketing

Not necessarily. AM Bristol use Mobil. As do AM Reading (going on my car's history.)
I suspect other AM dealers will use Mobil too.

Works out at £7.89 a litre

Nottingham certainly use Castrol, and my previous invoices show that Desmond Smail did, Stratstone Wilmslow, and Derby.
I imagine the dealers may have a little free reign as to which 10W60 they source. rotate

0w40 is for the V12, not the V8. I'd be worried if they put that in one of my cars. You may be fine if you only drive your car casually. But that oil may not have the protection your engine needs for "performance" driving.

Unscientific observations:
-Castrol was the original fill, some/all (not sure which) US dealerships switched to Shell when BMW did because that's how they were getting Castrol TWS. (At least, that's what I was told by a couple dealerships.)
-It seemed like I was burning through Shell oil VERY quickly. At its worst, I went through ~5L of oil in 6k miles. I switched from Shell to Motul and haven't had any issues like that.
-My oil catch cans collect 150-180 ml between oil changes (~1 yr, 4-8k miles). I've seen this from my cars and customer cars and is pretty consistent.

In case there's any confusion, the original "Castrol TWS" name was marketing to brand 10w60 (T W S = Ten Winter Sixty) as a performance oil, which is was/is as it was made for high-revving engines. TWS has gone through several revisions/reformulations/etc over the years.

0W-40, Holy crap the dealer did that? Wouldn't give me much confidence in that dealer.
