2018 Vanquish S slow and hesitant when cold
Discussion
Hi all
I wonder if anyone has experienced what I have with a Vanquish or Vanquish S.
I have had 4 Vanquishes (2 have been the S) so know the car and it’s characteristic pretty well.
With my current Vanquish S (2018 model year) I have noticed that if you drive it as soon as you start it from stone cold it is really sluggish. This is something I have noticed on all the previous Vabquishes I have owned. However I have also noted on this car that if you pull away gently when cold then then give it a little more throttle it will almost hesitate with a slight cough before it accelerates. I am not talking about flooring the throttle here. I am talking about accelerating slightly harder than zero throttle, enough for the car to rev to 2800 or 3000 RPM.
So first question is has anyone experienced either the sluggishness when cold or this cough/hesitation.
I have also noticed when at normal operating temperature that occasionally when accelerating from a standstill or accelerating from a crawl (like if in traffic at very slow, slower than walking pace ) the car coughs before accelerating as normal
Had the car to the dealer who checked for fault codes but found all ok
Anyone experienced the same or have any suggestions
Thanks
Peter

You mentioned, 'This is something I have noticed on all the previous Vanquishes I have owned.
Perhaps you intended to say, 'not noticed'.
It is often mentioned here, but there are experts not too far from Gaydon, who have repeatedly diagnosed difficult faults, after main dealers have been puzzled. Perhaps worth trying, depending on your location.
There are indeed a couple of threads somewhere on here with owners experiencing hesitation through the rev band. I cannot find them at the moment but they have been recent. One was cured apparently but the owner never got to drive the car to test for themself as he sold it.
As for your issue specifically from cold - I had something similar and it was traced to oil having been over-filled (by the dealer not me) which was the main issue (and also the air filters were clogged which did not help, probably also as a result of the over-fill)

Hello and thanks for your comments. I have indeed seen the other posts regarding hesitation. I do think mine seems to be slightly different. The oil is fine. I am someone who checks the oil every week and it is at the correct level. In fact in 5000 miles I don’t think the car seems to have used anyway I’ll talk.
Kind regards

Had my Vanquish (non S) for 3 months now I am concerned that at times there seems to be some hesitation from pressing the accelerator pedal and the car actually moving off, i.e. from an island or pulling out of a junction causing a few close encounters.
Is the hesitation a “They All Do That Sir” (TADTS) as past posts relating to this issue do not seem to reach a conclusion apart from one whereby a purge valve was swapped.

I know its not a vanq, but my mini had a similar experience. No fault codes, sorry sir there is nothing wrong with the car, but a hesitation, little cough/lurch, when slowly accelerating.
Anyway, cut a long story short, it was the spark plugs. The gap had become slightly too big... however, i’m guessing. The mini spark plugs are somewhat easier to check than a Vanq...
An engine is an engine, so maybe this helps.

Having owned one for a year I had a bit of trouble adjusting to the SSIII box not choosing first (obviously when being lazy and leaving it in "auto") when creeping up to a junction. Meaning unless you intervene it's still in 2nd when you pull out, and accelerates accordingly. I now manually pull it into first when I think I need to.Is the hesitation a “They All Do That Sir” (TADTS) as past posts relating to this issue do not seem to reach a conclusion apart from one whereby a purge valve was swapped.
I have a 6 speed Vanquish and it has a sharp throttle response whether cold or warmed up. I had heard that the 8 speed box is a little hesitant when pulling away, similar to other vehicles with the ZF 8 speed.
I had heard that the S has a better gearbox map so it may need a reflash of gearbox ECU.
