Got the car about 10 days ago and am pulling my hair out over differences with my two keys and the ignition sequence. Could do with some advice.

The glass key works as per section 4.10 of the handbook: 1. Push the ley in until it locks. 2. Press a further 10mm for 1st stage ignition. 3. Press all the way in for second stage ignition. 4. Foot on brake, push key in and hold for engine start. Perfect. No problem.

The plastic key will do this sometimes, but it is rare. However, it will work 100% of the time if I go straight to second stage ignition or engine start.

I'm getting mixed messages from 2 dealers including that the plastic key has a different chip so behaves differently.

I just want my experience to be the same as everyone else - what is "normal"?

All keys behave the same. That said, difference in heft may result in less consistency on your part with the valet key vs the crystal key. Make sure you use two flat fingers (if you aren't doing so).

Why don't you press the brake pedal and push the key all the way in with one motion ? Works in my V12S flawless with both keys.

Some of us like to see the red light come on before initiating a start. My car telling me that it's rip roaring to go!

Brake pedal pushed , plastic or glass key pushed all way in one movement , car starts and drive off smiling - works every time.

I drop the clutch and push the key (glass or plastic) all the way in and then just let go......then thunder.

I used to hold the key all the way in on my 2013 V12 until it fired up, but I've realised on the V12S I don't need to. Just push the key all the way and then let go, job done.

Interestingly I have had a similar problem since I picked up my 09 V8 vantage. Pushing key all the way in and starting the engine straight up is fine, but if I leave it flush with the dash at the ignition stage - no red light, and pushing the key in doesn't do anything. Someone one another thread mentioned key battery which I am yet to replace.

Annoyingly, the car was under warranty until I bought the car and didn't renew it over so it could/should have been fixed under that (assuming there even is a problem to fix in the first place).

Anyone else any experience with this issue?

As had been said before, make sure the key sits REALLY flush in the ECU slot (position "II") by using your flat fingers. Pushing too far will result in exactly what you experienced: Nothing happens, not even when pushing right through then.

It usually takes me a few goes to get it started, with much pushing in and letting out at various stages - all part of the fun of ownership.

Tell me about it, Jonny, it took me ages to experience the so-called "slow start" procedure on mine. "Quick start" (i.e. pushing right through) always worked, of course. But I wanted the "slow" experience for the reasons posted earlier (system check, red glowing ECU). It was hopeless. My main dealer even stated there is no such thing as a "slow-start" on a Manual car. Then I dug out an old thread that said "Beware not to push too far". Aha. Depress clutch pedal within some seconds - et voilá: Red glow and engine start possible. bounce

I repeatedly had problems initially. I was probably pushing too far in, or maybe all the way in one movement.
Since then I adopted the way you have described above. When the red light illuminates it is then ready for, 'Push to start the thunder'.
No more problems.

This. Push is slowly and make sure it's perfectly flush with the dashboard. Even 2mm too much will not properly engage the red light at brake pedal press hence no start.

So push flush, then brake pedal, then all the way ?

Or push flush, then brake pedal ?

Loving this mini thread - always thought it was me being a gimp

Push at first click, flush... I normally wait for the electronics to do their things and push N to have the gearbox in neutral for the clutch learning procedure... brake pedal, red light, push all the way for a couple seconds, sensory pleasure.
