V8V Throttle body replacement

So I've been getting repeated emission service required messages and turns out the throttle body is malfunctioning. AM Gold Coast tell me it's the first time they have encountered this on a V8V.

07 manual with 78,000km and otherwise has been completely reliable

Also needs new oil separator

So two questions
1. Is this common - anyone else had same issue?
2. Are the two things possibly related?

Dont know for sure, but if the oil separator is bypassing oil into the throttle body, this could cause a fault code to show indicating a throttle body fault. I think I would thoroughly clean the throat and butterfly of the throttle body with carb cleaner before jumping into the expense of a new body.
