I'm not sure if Europe uses chains in the snow or if you all just put on winter tyres & they suffice

In Australia you have to carry chains in winter (which is just starting here) to go to the snowfields

We are planning a trip later in the year & I need to hire or buy some chains

so thought I'd ask for recommendations

a\any help appreciated

Hey Graeme,

A couple of years back a few of us headed up to Jindy for a few days. In the national park, indeed as you said, you have to carry snow chains. The police were pulling people over in a layby and checking everyone. My friend was in a 911 997 and had chains that he paid a fortune for. We ended up at Dead horse gap and whilst there it snowed. Even with his chains he could not get out of the car park. I had the range rover, so we grabbed a rope and I (gently) pulled him out.

Long story short - not sure I'd go up there in a RWD car, just in case.

Sean

where is your sense of adventure!!!

drove there many many times in my youth & young adulthood in rear wheel drive cars

only got a V8 or aV12 to choose from (I know poor choices led me to this) so need to find a solution

I was half hoping you'd say "I have some for my DB9 that you can call in & borrow from me on the way past"

Have enquired from the snow shop here if they can provide some for 275/35/19 or 295/30/19 tyres

we will see what happens

OLV

sorry I am unfamiliar with autosocks

what are they?

Graeme

PS I just searched for them and they look like a great solution

I would be happy to buy them and suspect they would pass inspection

many thanks Olv

I would be interested to know the legalities as I might be travelling down to Spain via the Pyrenees over winter in the Aston and I know in some parts of France you have to legally carry snow chains. I wonder if the autosocks are acceptable.

Hey Graeme,

Well I certainly have some snow chains. You're welcome to borrow them but I don't think they'll fit. Come to think of it I'm not sure what they'll fit. I remember someone gave them to me and I just slung them into the back of the M3 back in the day. I figured if the Police were doing one of these checks then I'd get asked...."Hello sir, do you have Snow chains"..... I'd be able to reply "Oh yes, I sure do officer - here they are". They don't fit my car, but I still have snow chains, which was the law.

Just make sure that the snow chains really clear everything inside the fender...

Q12 Are AutoSock approved for use in the Alps, where "snow chains" are compulsory?

AutoSock have been approved since 2010 for use in France as an alternative to metal snow chains where the B26 snow chain signs require snow chains to be carried. Visitors to France will need to download a sticker to fix to the AutoSock storage bag, and are also advised to download the relevant details, taken from the Gendarmerie website, and AutoSock's press release.

As had been said above, if you're thinking about snow chains I'd make sure that they are AML approved items (and not just the chain manufacturers said they'll fit). Astons are notorious for minimal clearances between tyres and wheelarch liners

I have V12V twin 5 spoke wheels on the car and thought if I was to need chains I would have to go back to the original 7 spoke wheels (narrower and significantly more clearance to the guards)

But with the auto socks I will be fine with the current wheels

My plan is to get the auto socks and download the details of Canadian, French etc approvals and have them in the car if needed.

Sean

Thanks for the offer of the chains, like your style having them in the boot - suspect we will need all the space we have in the Aston though (another advantage of the auto socks)

Ok so with some great customer service from Autosock Norway (many thanks Olv for the suggestion) I've managed to buy a set from one of the UK retailers. Have found out they are only legal for 4WD cars in NSW and not legal in Victoria (where I'm going) so will have to run that gauntlet if it comes up

Sean, I might need to borrow those old chains after all to get thru the random inspection (can you email me)
