Time for another knee-jerk reaction...

https://www.topgear.com/car-news/british/noise-cam...

Bad news for all us who de-cat’d! Looks like I’ll be marginalised to obscure Welsh country lanes biggrin

Favourite quote:

“They’ll also be used to target people “who rev car or motorcycles engines beyond legal limits”.”

Pray tell me ... is that 2,000 or 2,500 rpm? If so, forgive me for I have sinned. Quite a few times!

Granada lobbed. I’m outa here.

PS - was in Montreal over the weekend when the F1 circus rolled into town. Apart from one nice DB9 Volante parked up, it was a city full of tasteless prancing horses, raging bulls, be-winged Beetles, McLarens and such like. And too many AMG / neddy baseball caps. All were posing downtown trying to ricochet as much noise off the skyscrapers as possible. They usually sounded rattly and nasty which is a big disappointment. But apparently, it’s the only weekend in Montreal that the long arm of the law don’t fine you for excessive revving/noise! Perhaps it’s the dismal future.

I heard the politician announcing this a couple of days ago.

In my town, a petty official with a noise meter would have to either spend several days waiting at the roadside hoping a noisy car appears, or go after closing time on the right day, to a supermarket car park.

Give my Aston Martin enough revs and there is an enormous noise, but it is legal car unaltered from the factory. Therefore, how can I be guilty?

I think it depends if you have removed fuse 22.

Fuse 22 keeps the valves open lower down the rev range, so peak volume wouldn't be affected.

Yes I know the principles.
Fuse 22 (15) in, valves open 0 to 1,500, closed 1,500 to 4,000ish, open 4,000 ish to max revs.

My point was, in standard form (fuse in), my car with revs is probably far too noisy for the noise police, but it was passed as being acceptable by the government officials when built. Therefore amusingly, prosecution might be difficult, even though it could perhaps be louder than a young mans modified Fiesta.

Are we therefore to understand, that car manufacturers only have (or had) to meet a noise regulation, at an engine speed somewhere between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm?

The annoying thing about all of this is that there is a problem with overly loud exhausts on cars and motorbikes.... in certain places, affecting a few unfortunate people. So instead of blanket banning loud exhausts my view is that the powers that be should be looking at ways to deal with these local issues based on local circumstances. I think other options should be considered instead of moving to a blanket policy for everyone everywhere.

We are up I. The Lakes this week with a group of 10 Astons, probably half of which have been decatted and a couple with Titanium exhausts. The reaction from the public I would say is 50:50, some standing and scowling at us with the remainder encouraging use of the right foot. I’m with the people encouraging the right for biglaugh

From what I have read else where the noise detection cameras will be linked to ANPR this in turn will check to see the make and model of vehicle, this then determines the acceptable noise level. So an Aston will have a high noise threshold compared to say a Micra.

It's an interesting one, but I wouldn't be overly concerned. In a similar fashion that we'd slow down for speed cameras, you'd just disengage sport mode when passing a noise camera. I think it's city centres where this will get rolled out primarily, and it's only really the counter the ASBO lot in Lambo's and R8's that sit on Belgrave Square being all...[insert description here].

If they want noise, I'll bring the Corvette - that makes 123db at idle laugh
