Can anybody please tell me what the switch on the side of the steering column below the indicator stalk is for?

It's aftermarket and I've seen them used for Dension DAB installs or screen mirroring, odd place for it though. Perhaps you have a remote Fuse 22 override there?

Looks like the switch that makes your car sound louder or not.
That’s where it’s fitted in mine anyway.

That looks like the Works Service fitted remote fuse 22 switch. I had one on my 4.3 V8 that looked identical, same location as well.

that's what it is.
my hearing isn't the best.
I can only just hear the smallest difference.

I now have the emission service required light coming on?
any ideas as to what that might be?

The light may just go off after a few stop/start cycles, if the error is not permanent. Otherwise get an OBD II reader off amazon and read the error code. Likely it could be an O2 sensor. I had 3 out of 4 of them fail over 9 years in my first Vantage. The error code will inform you which sensor it is. You can reset the message, then see if it comes back. They often go over time, maybe intermittent over a year or so. Write the code down and see if its the same one re-occurring.

Have the OBDII meter is really useful for any car you own, can save a fortune in dealer visits for diagnostics. You can also get a OBDII bluetooth dongle that connects to your phone. Simple code readers are £30-40 and will do the basics. If you spend £200 you can get one with a lot more Aston specific functionality.

Or save yourself even more £££ and get the Aldi one which will be in stock this weekend, works just as well as the cheap Amazon ones

My service emissions light came on earlier this year. I tried the stop and go technique about 10 times but it still stayed on. But about 6 weeks later it suddenly went off and has stayed off ever since. So my advice is first just give it a decent wait and see time period. That being said, an OBD2 reader is nice to have in the tool box anyway.

The purpose of having a fault code checker is to eliminate the fault from being serious, then knowing the code / light is of no concern means that driving around with the code present is of no real consequence. However, having not diagnosed the code and running around with the light on in the hope it will self extinguish is not advised. It doesn’t help when most error light illuminations is the system crying wolf, but ignoring a serious code could make the repair £worse in the end.

OBD reader states:
0153
O2 sensor Bank 2 sensor 1

Which I think is a Lambda sensor somewhere around the Catalytic convertor.

So not serious, I've cleared it and will monitor.....

Just in case you need it in future. If you keep getting the same message over time, worth replacing the applicable sensor.

Thanks
Lifes been much better with the code reader.
occasional co2 sensor warnings but not regular.
ill get them changed when I get the car serviced.

This frosty morning another problem developed.
the car was frozen and in operating the door handle the window refused to drop.
im going to try putting some furniture polish in the runners.
Any other tips?? is this a common issue.
the car lives outside and is a daily.

Put vaseline around the windows. Works a treat.

Door handles are a funny one; you just have to hope you can get in there really.

My Vantage windows never freezed up over winter, over last 12 years but my other half Volvo does regularly, even the doors get stuck sometime. Tried all sorts over the years but still no joy. Just water getting into gaps and getting frozen.....warm water does the trick on bad mornings.
