Clipped a kerb about half a mile from my cottage, B road with no kerbs... or so I thought... two bikes up my rear, moved over as tight as I could to let them pass, and bang... pulled in to a field entrance a few metres further on, plugged in the comp’ and sealant but air was coming out faster than it was going in... no visible damage to the rim, tyre is a gonner though... got it home without damage, hopefully suspension and steering bits not damaged... serves me right for being courteous frown

Sorry to hear that. But no permanent damage done.

Best thing is to buy a lottery ticket and hope karma comes your way to balance things out wink

That’s a pisser. Opinion from a biker that’s shared by many of us, please don’t move over. We will get past when we want to without much effort and it saves you from trashing a tyre / wheel and us getting all sorts of crap flung up at us from the gutter.

I’d the riders are being knobs then ignore them.

If it wasn't for bad luck etc... smile

This was only a few hundred metres from home, just popped up and taken some pics, here's the offending cover...

Should that sit flush with the kerb? If so please report to the council.

That is dreadful workmanship

From your photograph Richard, it would appear that the slope kerbstones were fitted purely to offer protection to the raised drain cover. There only seem to be two kerbstones on that stretch of road, so their intended purpose is obvious, but was not achieved.

Had they installed those two kerbs properly in-line with the metal drain cover, it is likely that your tyre could have ridden up the slope without damage. There would of course have been a bump, but the slope would probably have prevented any solid impact, depending on speed. The protruding corner of metal though, would obviously be the object causing sudden impact damage.

Anyway, you knew that already.

I would be sending a stiff letter, accusing the highways authority of being negligent and therefore responsible for the damage you suffered, due to poor workmanship and allowing a hazardous object to be permanently in the highway without a warning sign.

Unlike potholes which can obviously occur suddenly without the highway authority being aware until it has been reported, this is a structure. By using Google StreetView on a desktop PC, you will be able to see previous images of that drain cover and therefore establish that it is not a recent construction. If the authorities then claim to be unaware, that would seem to be just an admission of mismanagement. Perhaps throw in, contravenes health and safety principles. They seem obsessed by that.

Performance cars need replacement tyres in pairs, so you have also suffered loss of the other tyre (proportionally ref. tread wear remaining).

Good luck.

That really is shockingly bad, and I see an excellent and invisible pot hole repair slightly up the road...?

If it has been reported before you have a good chance, and the shiny cast iron looks like this is not the first time it has been abraded by a tyre!

Good luck indeed, do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies chaps....

Jon you are spot on re tyres... I've got a price from Black Circles for two front Conti 6's, however I'm currently running Eagle F1's... Fronts have just hit six years so that's AM's recommended life span for the tyres on the car.. Rears are 5 years old, plenty of tread front and rear, but I'm wary of running different tyres front and back, and Conti 6's and Michelins seem to be high on the list for good replacements.. I see we can get Pilot Sport 4's for the front but not the 4S.... So, probably going to be new Conti 6's all round, and I'm committed to a wheel refurb when tyres are replaced.... So, 4 new tyres and wheel refurb brings me to about £1200... also ordering new rear discs and pads etc, so could be beans on toast Christmas day biggrin

Oh, and new wheel centres too, they don't seem to wear very well smile
