Not sure if it is time to let my V8 Vantage go.
Just not using it and need something with a little more room,(dog won't fit in).
Really like the look of the DB11 but need to save a far bit more cash first.
The Vantage has just had a new mot, serviced a couple of months ago and 10 months AM warranty. So could it be the right time to sell and put the money in the bank, or wait till the spring when they say is the time to try and sell these sort of cars.
your thoughts please.

Cheers Steve

See if anyone is interested now at the price you want, if not wait to the spring smile Snap up a cheap DB11 next spring with another 6 months of depreciation in it.

I don’t know if the dog will fit any better in the DB11 than in the Vantage. I have had both the DB11 is gone and the Vantage is a keeper.

Having been through this timing of selling with motorcycles with a similar profile of autumn to spring, I rarely found the vehicles actually worth more 6 months down the line. As noted, it's about finding a buyer.

But a good point about sale of old and purchase of new differential depreciation, which ultimately means you'd keep waiting...

This image shows the asking prices of V8s for sale in autotrader each week for the last year. It's just 4.7 Coupes MY 2013 to 2016, no V12 or roadsters. The blue line is the median asking price, the red line is the mean price of the cheapest 3 cars on sale to indicate the entry point to the market.

Note that this is just asking prices, not sale prices, but it's still a guide to what the market is doing at that time. As you can see prices don't tank as you get into winter, and the certainly don't go up as you hit spring. I also track how many are for sale, and how long the average advert has been on for. The number of cars for sale is fairly stable over the year, peaking during the summer. The average advert age is actually highest at the end of the summer, implying cars hanging around.

This makes me think that demand drops off over the winter, but so does supply, as people hang on to their cars to sell "at the right time". Price wise it seems to balance out. If you hang on and sell your car in spring there might be more potential buyers, but there will also probably be more competition. (Perhaps a statistician or someone who knows the market better will come and tell me I'm wrong).

If it was me, if you no longer want the car and definitely want to sell it, I'd just put it online at a price you'd be happy with. If it doesn't sell quickly you haven't really lost much.

I bought my under 3 year old 4.7 in 2011 as a keeper, so have not paid very close attention to Vantage values.

I have however noticed a variation in the rate of depreciation. The asking prices stayed surprisingly level for my first 4 years of ownership, then they moved down at a faster rate.

The basics have been;
New (incl options) to 3 years old = 38% loss of value. *
3 years to 6 years = 10% loss of value.
6 years to 9 years = 23% loss of value.

In cash terms, the value drop in the first 3 years, was double the drop in the subsequent 6 years. Overall in comparison to many popular everyday cars, they are wonderful to own and have a lower total ownership cost than might be expected.

- * It would of course be greater than 38% for the owner(s) who sell, because all the figures are main dealer asking prices.

Slightly off topic but I know my old car (4.7 V8 SS Roadster) that I have just sold have previously sold for the following

04/10 new £118,500
04/11 8k £74,000 trade
05/14 16k £50,000 trade
09/19 30k £39,500 private

I am sure if I wanted I could have got a bit more but just needed it gone as I could not use it.

My calculator Tim, show that you did the best financially with this car.
Your 4 years ownership cost in depreciation £2,500 per year for 14k miles.

Assuming a gross trade margin of about £10,000;
The first owner spent £54,500, for just one year and 8k miles.
The second owner spent £11,300 per year, for 3 years and 8k miles.

Staggering differences. That must make you feel better. Sorry that you had to let the car go.

Was a bit better than that, slight typo as I sold it September this year so sub £2k annual depreciation, annual warranty renewal was the most costly item.

Where did you find the charts on their web site? That looks a really interesting feature I've not seen on there before.

Thanks in advance

I store the data and calculate the results myself. I have a program which collects the adverts a few times a week for certain cars I want to watch the market for (Aston, Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren), and then stores the results. Then I can process the data to analyse market trends.

If you enjoy statistics murphyaj, do you know about the DVLA new registration reports ?

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-set...

Scroll down to this one,
'VEH0160: Vehicles registered for the first time by make and model: Great Britain and United Kingdom (ODS, 6.12MB)'

Considerable detail is available, including individual sub-models.
They are quite slow to publish the latest figures, but they do appear eventually.
Aston Martin figures are no longer included on the SMMT monthly data, so this DVLA report is probably now our only source.

( tip - don't post anything here about the gen 2 Vantage. - wink - )

On this basis, I'm wondering if I have just stole a 4.7 roadster from a main dealer?
23k miles with a 2 year warranty for £40.5k?

Collecting tomorrow, very excited!

Slight deviation on topic (but relevant).....

When we all talk about the dealer margin, I think we all kind of assume it's about £10k. However, whilst I can see a 10 grand margin on a £100k car , surely the margin can't be the same on a £50k car. Much in the same way that I'm damn sure a dealer isn't going to move on a One-77 or a Vulcan for only £10k.

Thoughts ?

That certainly does look a good example Tony.
Had you been looking for a long time, or did you just chance upon it ?
Wonder if the previous owner bought another Aston Martin. Was it mentioned in conversation ?

Might this be your first Aston Martin ?

Enjoy your new car.

Thank-you!
Yes first Aston, coming from a 4.3 Tuscan. - Great fun 3 times a year, the rest of the time, just not worth the back ache, ear ache and lack of driving poise.
Dithered with what time change it for- Maserati GT, R8, 911. but very happy with my choice.

I'm not sure about the previous owner, will ask tomorrow.
Obviously excited about collecting tomorrow!
