New V8 vantage
Discussion
I collected a 4.7 Vantage Roadster at the weekend from Brentwood Aston Martin.
The only photos I have are too large file size for PH
Excellent service and thanks to Matt if you're on Pistonheads.
Coming from a 4.3 Tuscan, the Aston is surprising well fast and well made.
A real step up in terms of quality, build quality and overall enjoyment.
Though, there is something of the TVR within... A real level of misbehaviour from the exhaust note and the way it gathers speed. Definitely some TVR DNA in there somewhere!
The question I do have - The car has come with a remote exhaust switch, the fob does nothing, no noisier or quieter regardless of if it pressed or not.
My question: Is it in standard/quiet mode or not.
The exhaust is rather fruity, but not bonkers. How do I tell?
Many thanks and I'm delighted to have joined to AM club

Welcome Tony.
Interesting how many AM buyers have come from TVR.
As you say, there is an underlying concept similarity.
Shame that the resurrection of TVR appears to have stalled. Probably due to the huge amount of money needed these days, to go from concept to first day of full production.
From the drivers seat, I cannot hear any exhaust difference either with my 4.7.
In case you do already know, the factory basis is roughly;
Open 0 to 1,500 rpm
Closed 1,500 to about 4,000 rpm
Open above 4,000 rpm.
If you have any basic photo software, you can resize your photos to reduce the file size.
We like photos here, then we don't even need to ask what colour.
Enjoy your car.
If your exhaust remote system is the popular one (have forgotten the name), the fob should have padlock symbols. The fuse number involved is fuse 22 on your car (it changed to 15 on later models), so padlock closed is fuse in (valves operate as standard) and padlock open is fuse out, valves open all the time.
Think on the 4.3 model the sound difference is more noticeable than on the 4.7.
Sometimes the valves can become stuck, but that is more likely when fuse 22 has been removed (without a remote system) because the valves would then never move.
You can see the valves if you want to. The are external either side of the rear silencer. You can see short pushrods which operate the valves.
Assuming that the valves are not stuck, I suppose the way to try to check is keep revs at 2,000rpm and have someone listen outside, as you operate the fob buttons.
If the car was on a ramp, the pushrods should be seen to move, but only in the 1500 to about 4000 rpm range.
Perhaps don't worry too much, because when you accelerate above 4,000 rpm, it is plenty loud enough, especially if you can find a tunnel.
I have a spare remote valve system (the one referred to in a previous post) that has never actually been fitted as I ended up getting the Bamford Rose sports cats and their 3 way switch instead. Anyway, happy to let you have it for what i paid (about half of what they are new) if you want to fit it and see! also a 4.7 Roadster by the way
Welcome to the fold lawtoni
The guys at Brentwood are superb, and your new purchase looks great!
That remote relay looks like the one that Clive supplies. Have you checked the batteries in the fob? I’ve had to change mine a couple of times, perhaps due to overuse! As others have said, if that’s not the problem, perhaps a fault with the relay switch itself (or the connections are loose) or possibly stuck valves. Good luck. It shouldn’t be too difficult to resolve.

Thanks everyone.
Yes I love it! Far more than I was expecting to.
The led on the fob lights up. but maybe the battery is worth changing. Will try that.
Otherwise, can I pull the gubins from the fuse box? I'd really like to know if there is more volume available!
I took a real bath on the value of the TVR, as prices have gone off a cliff in the last 12 months or so, although I suspect similar form Astons so I might have saved as much as I lost on the TVR
Thanks again

That is indeed the CC charger remote kit. Don't forget that valves are opening only after a certain RPM, 4000 I believe for your car, so you will not hear any difference at start-up (which is done by default with open valves) and idle.
Try to take it out to see if the volume change, if so maybe you need to change the batteries in the remote. Putting it back in is quite easy, worst case scenario I can post you a picture of the instructions.
I also suggest to secondary decat the car, it's very easy on quite inexpensive on the 4.7. Search this forum, you will find many threads about it, including mine.

Clive fitted mine and told me he recommends that it’s in “loud” mode as standard - so you then have to switch to quiet after start up if you don’t want to wake the neighbours.
Therefore, it’s probably in loud mode.
Worth checking the in line fuse though.
The difference is very obvious once the system’s working.

My 09 4.7 was not the easy secondary de-cat, it was the difficult and expensive one! There is a thread how to check from lifting the bonnet...That is indeed the CC charger remote kit. You are right, there are a small number of 4.7 that have the difficult and expensive one, similar to the 4.3.
Indeed, it was the earlier ones. But it's ok - I've had the full Bamford Rose conversion (well, without the engine coming out) so it now sounds epic - and somewhat fruitier on 'quiet', too.Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
