Apologies I know these brakes come up a lot on this thread but hey, they're expensive!

I've been today to do my own pre purchase inspection on a v12v (timeless) and noticed there are some radial scratches on the front brakes that you can both see and feel (not grooves but they feel slightly rough). Rears are totally smooth. They've been weighed etc by the dealership but I want to make sure that this is normal as I've never had CCBs. The car's done 25k miles.

As a side note, I noticed the steering wheel judders when turning it if the car is stationary or moving slowly (e.g. t junction), TADTS?

Thanks!

Shuddering - YES, at full lock at slow speed TADTS.

Brake discs - looks like the pads are worn out and the pins have been grinding on the discs.

So, those discs may be screwed.

I would ask for the report on the discs - weighing them is a lot of work, you need a special oven to dry the discs, so anyone doing that should be an expert.

I'd get an independent garage to do an inspection. I'd use Bamford Rose, others are available.

Happy hunting!

yeah that's what I was worried about, I guess it could've been a previous set of pads that wore out even if the current ones are fine. I've asked them to take another look and get back to me, good shout about asking for the disc report. Otherwise the car is perfect so fingers crossed I can get it resolved! I was hoping I'd wouldn't need to get an independent inspection seeing as it's an approved dealer.

Thanks for the help!

I recently purchased a Vanquish from an approved AM dealership with AM Timeless warranty which is actually a car care plan warranty and nothing to do with AM, (there is a separate thread on MOT advisory and AM Timeless warranty).

After 6 weeks of ownership the car has a leaking timing cover, both offside dampers leaking, nearside damper misting, bolts missing from the under tray and overfilled with oil.

All of the above picked up by an independent inspection after seeing that the car had advisories on the current MOT.

The AM dealership inspection mentioned none of this and on the inspection report it states that the car is a Vanquish Coupe when it’s a Volante, says it all with regard as to what’s been checked.

If I ever purchase a second hand car again first stop would be an independent inspection and I would let the selling dealer know that.

Oof sorry to hear you've had so many issues! The one I'm looking at actually just failed its MOT although thankfully it was just due to the headlight pointing too high.

tbh I was a bit suprised that they couldn't tell me how many mm were left on the tyres, surely that's one of the most basic checks?

Will see about getting an inspection done, has anyone got any experience using Aston Engineering in Derby? Unfortunately Bamford Rose are a bit far away..

I've only had a couple of tiny things done by Aston Engineering but my limited experience has been very positive and I've only ever heard good things about them. They're more into the older stuff but they do cover Gaydon era cars too. Not sure what they charge for an inspection.

As far as I know BR will travel to a car to do an inspection so it may be worth asking them. Is the car in Nottingham?

In case you try looking for info on this via a search engine you may find that “radial” is not the right term for these marks.
Radial would go from the centre out to the edge of the disc.
Good luck finding the right car.

This was my initial thought too. I guess it would depend on how bad it was as to whether the disc was knackered or not. I'd assume that providing the rest of the disc is glass smooth, then would this really cause an issue.......I don't know.

I appreciate we all want our cars to be museum mint, but unless money is no object, we need to also apply a level headed degree of realistic to things too. I'm not an engineer so it's all just opinion, but if I had a small scratch/groove on a steel disc, I wouldn't be binning it unless it actually affected the handling.

Agreed. If it's just cosmetic that's fine it's just I know very little about this type of brakes so wanted to double check!

Those discs are not as they should be, as said probably the pads got to low will new pads remove these lines i don't know.
The dealer has removed and weighted the disc? i don't believe it.
BR is a good choice as they know very well about these CCB,s might be worth a call even.

Spoke to a specialist and they said it's nothing to be alarmed about, just cosmetic. Dealer said the pads on there look pretty much new so should fine now.

Collecting on Wednesday, getting very excited now!

I had a similar issue on my discs prior to changing my pads. The faint circular lines on the discs disappeared after the new pads were fitted. Its just the squealing that does my head in now, but that's a different story.

Just as an aside to this, does everyone just fit the std Aston dealer supplied pads to suit the ceramic discs or are there options out there? ie Porterfield etc?

I think people get over cautious about these discs, understandably I guess seeing as they’re TFD. But would pass have worn out causing that mark?

My car had done 7k mikes when I bought it at 4 yrs old, had been treasured all its life but the discs didn’t look as smooth and shined like new or even like the rears.

Yes 100%. The wear indicator is set lower in the pad material than the damn pins wobble

For a matter of interest? what is the pad thickness remaining when these pins start to come through?
