I don't like rusty parts on my cars and therefore potentially thinking of getting the rusty bit in the pic replaced, or potentially powder coated.

I have no idea what the part does though, so don't want to go tearing apart the engine for the sake of vanity when I could be opening up a can of worms.

Anyone got any ideas ?

That the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) Valve.

They are rusty on all the V8 Vantages I have seen. The problem is as it is actually part of the exhaust system so the casting gets pretty hot !!

Powder coat wont work because of the temperature, but something like exhaust manifold paint, or brake caliper paint might be a better bet.

I changed mine for a new one as I was trying to track down another problem and changed the EGR in the process. Turns out it was nothing to do with the problem I was having, but left the new one on the car.

Cheers

Thanks Mike - very helpful. So no issue unbolting, tidying up and reinstalling ? Got some high temp paint on the shelf.

You wouldn't happen to have your old one knocking about would you ?

Cheers

Easy to remove to tidy up.

You should probably get a new metal gasket for it as they crush when fitted and may not seal properly if re-used.

Gaskets are available from the usual parts suppliers. For example, scuderiacarparts.com/part/191609/astonmartin/6g333510625/gasket-egr-valve.html or Aston Bits etc.

I do still have the old EGR Valve I removed, but planning to keep it for a spare. Genuine new ones are available at around £200 or used ones are regularly listed on the Bay of E.

Got mine new from Nick Mee if I remember correctly, which also included a gasket and new bolts.

Part numbers:

EGR Valve 6G33-9Y456-AB

Gasket - EGR Valve 6G33-3510625

Hope it helps.

Mike

Perfect - many thanks Mike.

Will take it off and give it a blast with the wire brush before using high temp paint.

Incidentally, is there a coolant pipe going to the unit ? Don’t particularly fancy getting coolant everywhere for the want if asking.

Spent some time under the bonnet today and replaced the rusty cam cover bolts and also took off the EGR valve and de-rusted then painted the cast iron body.

Looking a lot nicer under there now !

Before

After

The cam cover bolts were a bit fiddly. Your best friend if you’re thinking of doing this would be a deep 10mm socket. I didn’t have one, so made do with a ring spanner, which took yonks.

Looks really good Jonny, you must be pleased with that.

I admire your enthusiasm, to be dealing with many things on your car.

I also like the pristine look, but always seem too busy to do any car work.
Fortunately, Bamford Rose are very good at keeping everything looking new for me.

Have you got ideas for further improvements ?

Not necessarily improvements, but general cleaning, tidying and maintenance all over the car.

Anything I do will be reversible, so currently done or on the go is a headlight vent kit, with what I hope are improvements on the kit you can buy online. H&R spacers on the rear, new discs and pads all round, thermostat change, wing mirror arms removed, blasted and powder coated and a good squirt of ACF50 anywhere I think it is needed.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but I really enjoy the satisfaction of little projects.
