Hello AM people.
Hopefully I'm not bringing up done and dusted discussions of old, but could I ask with respect to a 4.7L V8 Vantage, if anyone here has installed a supercharger or turbo kit to give the car a bigger punch in power?

Do they have a value for money positive effect on the car, and can the car 'handle' it in terms of reliability, chassis, drive train etc. ?

The only SC kit ive seen cost £20k with just a parts warranty (if you blow your engine up you are on your own) and I dont think it adds £20k to the value of a used 4.7 in fact you likely restrict your market for resale. Its not a very common conversion. Numerous threads on here discussing it.

Does it add a lot of power ...yes if the dyno charts are anything to go buy, more power than a V12 Vantage S for "just" £20k.....

Watch the Bamford Rose vids about supercharging and also about their performance upgrades.

Hard to see the point really.

How much is a 4.7 worth? 40k? Entry level v12 60k? Turbo kit 15k plus? There's no economic case.

Plus wasted money really as no one will want to buy it when you're ready to sell. It's an Aston Martin, not a Supra.

Cost to change v8 to V12V is probably a bit light . I’ve just gone 2007 v8 to 2012 V12V , cost to change c£40k
I thought long and hard about the supercharger route at £15k .
There are lots of subjective / non fact based opinions about GMR supercharger and then bamford rose critique .
I have spoken with 2 people with GMR kits , one local to me but I didn’t get a chance to go out in the car .he was very enthusiastic about the change . I also have spoken with Aaron Perrott whom I regular see at hillclimbs and sprints and he competes in his v8 with the GMR very successfully and without issue .
The bamford rose video makes sense but I’m always nervous of people openly criticising other companies . Yes gmr haven’t sold many kits but it’s a small market .
I’m not sure their demonstrator is standard - in the supercar build tv program that Kahn did there was a GT4 comment made about the engine . I noted mike wilds was driving their car and he knows what he’s doing ...

^^^^ Agree most of that. I like the idea of SC and water injection is good move but the CR would worry me (and clutch). As has been said the change to V12 would be wiser and more cost effective taking into account re-sale time as the cost of the SC kit would be lost. I 'used' to like reading BR's posts as 'some' seemed informative but I really don't care much for the videos I've seen where he criticises other companies too much and even has a go at owners, so that's put me right off BR tbh.

If you are aware of the presenters background, Mac, then that is fine.

However, if possibly you don't, then you might take a different view.

IMO, those upgrades tend to me a waste of of money. The cars are getting cheaper and bolting on $20k's worth of supercharger is not going to add $20k to the value. Money is better spent getting a V12V, Rear engine porsche or SL55/63 if you really feel like you need to go faster.

Its not about adding value , it is about more power and torque .... and if it is cost effective , why not ?

You cannot fail to be aware of the presenter's background , he tells you ! But if someone is selling performance parts and decides to diss a competitor ( and some customers !!) then you have to question the impartiality ...

I have spoken with 2 GMR customers who are very happy as stated . Actually ,BR's video convinced me not to go the GMR route . But with v8's at £25k and a £15k supercharger , a 580bhp Aston for £40k sounds quite appealing .

Lots of people supercharger e46 m3's that already make 100 bhp per litre without issue

I do find the BR manifolds for the v12 very appealing smile

Has he mentioned a specific era and engine?

I think it's mentioned in both the " Bamford Rose " advice topic on here but also on their website

Back last year I had a good chat with one of the directors of GMR, he has a supercharged GT8 and the now well known green Zagato shooting brake that did the Mille Miglia (it gets used regularly). We talked about the GMR conversion as it's quite a well engineered solution, and although not cheap, utilises the right parts and is well proven.

I speak with a little experiencing of supercharging (3000-4000 horsepower, non Aston related stuff I build at weekends, so of no interest here). The elephant in the room here is that the moment you deviate from OEM, you're somewhat on your own in terms of warranty and factory support etc - but the GMR kit doesn't crank up the boost too much. The benefit of using a Whipple style blower is it's efficient and doesn't build as much heat as the roots blowers I use, meaning lower overdrive ratios can be used to produce equivalent boost, with (crucially) cooler intake charge.

Both the 4.3 and 4.7 V8 sound fantastic when supercharged, and sometimes they even become more frugal at the pump...

The GMR supercharger kit's boost is kept low for safety and long-term reliability. The power output of the old system is about the same as a V12 Vantage S, but with torque that comes on sooner and stronger. Fuel economy and emissions are both improved with the supercharger, especially since the engine doesn't need to be revved so much to get the car to move as it is with the n/a factory setup (especially especially on the 4.3L cars with much less torque). The kit has been completely redesigned and I'll have the first one in North America, which is going on my '07 V8V. The new kit adds some safety measures, makes installation much easier and safer, and allows GMR to sell outside of their geographic area - up until now they've only sold kits so long as they themselves install it and that's excluded a lot of potential customers (myself and my patiently-waiting customers included).

The value for money proposition is always subjective. On one hand, we almost never get our money back for the mods we do. On the other hand, it's V12VS power for a fraction of the price of a V12VS, plus you can have a manual gearbox far more easily with the V8V than with the V12VS. Some of my customers aren't concerned with the sunk cost of the superchargers as they're not worried about the loss if/when they sell and want a supercharged Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Others, which include me, don't mind because we don't intend to sell our cars - we only "lose money" if we sell, and that's not happening anytime soon.

I hope that helps, and I'm happy to answer any questions about the supercharger kits smile

Full disclosure: I'm Rich Seidlitz, the guy behind Redpants, and I'll be selling GMR's supercharger kits after I give the thumbs up when I install mine.

I've had a 4.3 V8, sold to get into a V12V.
I've also got a 5.0 Range Rover Sport supercharged.

The Range Rover engine has links back to the AML 4.3 and 4.7 V8 (a topic done to death on here, so I won't comment further on that).

Would I take a 4.3 or 4.7 and supercharge it? No. Look at the divergence in setup for 4.3, 4.7 and 5.0.

Good luck, but I wouldn't fancy driving a supercharged AML engine on an autobahn on a hot day at WOT...

Boom!

Are you aware of any GMR supercharged cars that have gone boom ? As I stated above , one successfully competes regularly in sprints and hillclimbs ( admittedly not autobahn wot but a good test for reliability ) . Its interesting that Telum01 is confident enough in them to sell them in the USA . Very few objective comments on this matter
