Hi all,
I will be picking up my first Aston this week, an 2006 Vantage with 90.000 km (55.000 miles) on it.
(I already have a TVR Chimaera which I am restoring, outriggers etc, so that is how I registered with PH)
As I live in The Netherlands, it is a very rare car over here. We only have 2 official AM dealers in the whole country. And no dedicated indies unfortunately.

So I am planning to do a lot of servicing myself. Having worked on a Ferrari 355 distribution (engine out) and having replaced the rod bearings on my bmw z3Mcoupe, I think I at least can have a try.
And as the car seems to be on its original clutch, which is starting to squeel a bit from standstil, that might be the first major task.
So I have spent hours trying to find out which choice to make in replacing the clutch.
This is what I understand so far:
- the early clutch setup is heavy
- the OEM replacement clutch was improved in later years, so a direct replacement single plate set up is better than what was originally installed.
- but the dual plate setup is even better, but always requires a complete kit to replace all components (flywheel etc). Which probably is wise even with OEM set up.
- there are several dual/twin plate aftermarket setups (DA for example, did not find the BR set up however), and in the UK there are several indies that can help you with your choice which one to choose.
- but over here in The Netherlands, that is not so easy. So I will need to make a decision based on info from this great forum and 6speedonline
- and then there is the costs. If I order in the US with VelocityAP, I will have to pay at least 21% taxes, so like another 700 euro/usd/GBP.
- then I read about the AMR kit that for example Scuderiacarparts sell. It is the AMR 6G33-11-10821.
For me that is the easiest thing to do: buy that kit in the UK (hopefully without extra taxes) and start the surgery.
Does anybody know if it is the wisest decision, and more importantly, is that kit complete? It looks to be missing a part on the scuderiacarparts website (looks like a normal single plate assembly to me!). The person I chatted with, did not know if it was complete...
Or is the jury out and advising another kit that I have not found, for equal money? The 6G33-11-10821 seems to be the cheapest option?
I hope that you can help me! Thanks in advance!

You can get the VelocityAP clutch package from me (Redpants/USA), DAE (UK), or VelocityAP themselves (Canada). Regardless of who you order it from, it'll come complete with all the hardware needed. You'll need a bottle of brake fluid handy to refill the clutch line once everything is reassembled. The only taxes you would pay from the US would be the import duties on the value of the shipment. I'd imagine it's the same if ordering from Canada. No idea on ordering from the UK as I don't know if Brexit has affected anything for import duties on car parts.
I've sold a few of the AMR clutch packages as well, which customers have been happy with, but I can't speak to other vendors that sell them.

Thanks for your reaction.
What I do not understand is the prices. As I live in The Netherlands, everything outside of the European Union will be subject to import duties and VAT, so in my case a minimum of 21%.( I assume/hope that imports from the UK to the EU still are free of VAT ).
So I will have to order in the UK, US simply is to expensive. VAT is already 21% over the price paid in the US, not just the shipping ...and then you get the import taxes on top of that.... I know from other items I buy with Ebay on a regular basis...

When I look at the DA website, the VAP kit is priced at 3420 GBP, and installation according to the website is just 200 GBP (???) . I thought installing was like 10 hours, so lets assume 1250-1500 GBP?
So the rest of the 1250-1500 GBP is in the 3420 price already?
In my case I just need the parts and not the labour, and 3420 GBP is way more expensive than the say 2750 price tag of the AMR kit.
Or am I comparing apples to oranges? And is the DA/VAP kit cheaper than 3420 if I just need the parts?
Or is the pricing constructed like that to get the cars in for installing by DA company? And is it no use to buy the kit without having them install it, because you pay for labour that you will not be having done?

I'm pretty sure that the price you're seeing of £3420 will be fully fitted. Just call up and as, I'm sure all suppliers would be happy to help.

Whilst not a specific answer to your question, I have 2010 4.7 convertible which I'll be driving to NL a few time this year. My car is maintained by BR so if every you want me to bring parts over (preferably quite small parts - not the biggest trunk on a convertible!) or help in other ways just drop me a line

This additional cost, must be what President Trump was referring to a few months ago.

Think he said,

Autos EU to USA = 2.5% tariff.
Autos USA to EU = 10% tariff.
In his opinion not fair, so he threatened a 25% tariff on imported EU autos.

That threat shook the EU Presidents. They immediately went to America for trade talks.

Manners79, thanks for your very kind offer! Maybe I will need something by then. In any case enjoy your stay.

The idea of a road trip is very tempting, but with an already squaling clutch I am not sure if I would take the gamble to drive that far.

I will contact DA to see if the parts alone are cheaper.

There’s also an official AMR twin plate clutch available.

I would definitely go with the twin plate clutch for your enjoyment... if affordability is an issue then wait until you can save up.

I am also ordering the AMR body kit (minus the hideous wing).

Hey Robbe,

Which kit did you take at the end?
I’m in the exact same spot now, comparing the VAP with the AMR kit which indeeds seems to be less expensive.

Remember that at present, trade between UK and EU still counts as within EU trade, even though the UK is no longer a member of the EU. Presumably therefore you would not face any extra tax on a UK purchase.

This may change on 1st January 2021, so an early purchase might be worthwhile for you.
