Never owned an Aston before...always thought it was going to be a DBS but I want to get a V12 Vanatage S Roadster with a manual gearbox. Appreciate they're rare cars and from what I can see there is only one for sale right now. This one at £125k.

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

I've looked in old threads but can't see anything about this. Where do the Manual V12 Vantage S Roadsters normally price as a premium vs the Coupe ? Looking at the classifieds there are a couple of Manual Coupe's at £115k ? So is £10k about normal ?

I suppose it would also be good to know where people think the price difference is between SSIII cars and Manual cars.

Also is anyone has a view on the must have spec items or any that make a difference to second hand values that would be very helpful too.

I'm not in a hurry to buy but doing my homework now!

Many thanks

I can’t help with the questions, but that’s a very nice spec which I imagine will age gracefully.

I’m not sure how I feel about the centre console in the later Vantages.

If I wanted a V12 Vantage Roadster manual, it would be one of the limited edition six speed models.
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=17...

No fancy dogleg 7 speed, or adaptive suspension, but with so much V12 torque, even a five speed gearbox would be fine.
More depreciation will have already taken place, so probably a lower cost too.

Just a suggestion. They are all brilliant cars.

Thanks I’ll have a look at the earlier six speed too. That list of special editions is quite incredible !

That one doesn’t look unreasonably priced compared to what I paid for a similar coupe a few months ago BUT is going to be out of AM warranty now/soon. The only thing I can think of in terms of options would be carbon (vents + mirrors) and secondary decat. B&O might be attractive to some buyers.

There aren’t a lot of these around. I certainly didn’t wait around when I found one with a spec I liked.

I am lucky enough to have had both the 6 speed and the latest 7 speed AMR and am really not sure where people are coming from that the 6 speed is the better car. Being a small car manufacturer they improve models year on year and their final edition is normally the most well resolved.

I am not sure how much of a comparison those recommending the 6 speed have been able to do but I did 17k miles in the 6 speed and have done 6k in the 7 speed. Provided you can get your head around a dogleg box (just think about whether you are going up or down in gear) it is a much smoother gear change. The AMShift blips add to the drama as well. The adaptive suspension transforms the car enabling you to get the power down better and I prefer the fascia and the fact that mine has Apple CarPlay.

I see the car you are looking at doesn’t have the lightweight carbon seats and that would be essential for me although some on here do not like them. As for B&O then in a roadster you’re are losing vital space in the boot - and I seldom have music on in the car because I have the roof down and an exhaust switch to have it on loud all the time.

As for rarity I don’t think there is a lot in it. Both are very rare cars and because the 7 speed manual came along so late not many were built.

You need to drive both to compare yourself and make sure you get a decent drive to get a good feel. If you want any other thoughts just get in touch. Good luck with the search.

Just to pitch in (having had the 6 speed and currently the 7 speed), this is spot on. The 7 speed is the final better version of this car. Yes the gearbox takes a bit of getting used to initially, but once you get used to it you stop thinking about it. It just becomes natural. I actually think the box is better due to the shift's being shorter than the 6 speed. I have also found that my 7 speed has been put together better than the 6 speed. All those niggles get ironed out. HTH smile

Just to chip in on this too, having had a 6 speed coupe and now a 7 speed roadster, the later is a better car all round IMHO. The adaptive suspension alone makes the world of difference to me. I found the suspension in the 6 speed to be more or less non-existent, to the extent that the wife actually preferred not to even go in it on long journeys.

I prefer the newer console, but that's entirely personal, both are obviously good enough, but I just fine the newer one far easier to navigate. Also, with a roadster the LCD screen of the 6 speed will be invisible in sunlight.

Mine has the standard seats, and given the choice I too would have gone for the lightweights, but I didn't spec it from new. As for B&O, as others have said it steals valuable boot space, and I think the standard "premium" system is more than ample (B&O tweeters do look cool though).

I just find the 7 speed a better bolted together car all round, so many little bits and bobs that have been upgraded make it a nicer drive.

As for values, well obviously none of us know that, but if history has shown one thing it's that manual Volante/Roadster Astons seems to be very desirable as time goes on, and I don't see why this would change.

Ideally drive a 6 and 7 back to back (manual or Roadster) and see what you think. Both are totally bonkers cars with a mental soundtrack and so much torque it's dangerous. I found the 6 speed to be a "wilder" drive than the 7, but that might just be the way I drove a coupe vs a Roadster, I don't know.

If you are just looking for some fun for a year or two, then get a 6 speed as there's less depreciation (if any) to be had, where as the 7's "might" have a bit more to go. My personal view though is that any V12 Manual is going to be quiet desirable in the future as so few were built, so I don't think (crystal ball) you'll get burnt on either.

Ultimately, I would be more than happy with either a 6 or 7 speed. Given the choice of either I'd take the 7, but if in the future I could afford it, I'd happily have both a 6 and 7 speed Roadster in the garage.

In summary, both are bloody great cars and you won't regret whichever you buy. When it comes to rarity, they are both extremely rare, and other than the odd one coming up (I know there's 3 or 4 6's at the moment), I think many owners who have them are now probably in the "keeper" mode. As the saying goes, they don't make them like that anymore.

Let us know what you decide, and also HTH with any questions too.

Also, the Mariana Blue and Truffle one at Works is lovely............if my numbers come up tonight then it won't be for sale in the morning biggrin

Not owned either but driven both extensively and the 's' model is far superior,as you say most notably in it's ability to put its power down.I was about to buy one when I got the call from my Porsche dealer giving me a gt3 allocation and that is the only reason I never bought one, both are great but the 'S' is significantly better IMO.

Thanks all....people with feet firmly in both camps for the older and newer cars but I’d watched a couple of reviews from the likes of Henry Cathcpole and there seems to be a fairly common theme that the S’s updates make it a better car. You’d expect that though ! Seems like the price difference of the manual 6 speed and 7 speed Roadsters is about £30k which is less than the Coupe’s if I am looking at the market right but there obviously aren’t that many Roadsters on the market.

Interesting about the B&O taking up boot room....would want to use it for touring with my wife and she’s got a black belt in packing the kitchen sink so that’s an issue. Also with a v12 soundtrack I am not fussed about Hi-Fi ! Lightweight seats might be an issue....I’ve got buckets in my 991.2 GT3, my wife has done one 10 minute journey in 2 years...her back and the buckets don’t agree with each other. GT3 is going nowhere, I think they offer a fantastic contrast.

I’m about an hour from Newport Pagnell so when things return to normal I might pop up there....local Aston dealer closed about two years ago.

I genuinely don't know whether the one in mine works! I keep meaning to try it each time I get in, reach over to the console and get distracted by the sport button. biggrin

I'm 5 minutes from Works, so once lockdown is over if you fancy taking a look and a run out in a 7sp roadster then just shout.

as a current owner of a 6spd coupe and a 7spd roadster I can only echo what has been said.

I would point out that the biggest change to the drive is the active dampening, and you can have this fitted at Bamford Rose, as I did to my 6spd car.

If budget allows, I'd go for the newer car.

I'm a former 6 and current 7 speed owner too. I agree that the S is the better car - not as much as all that in it but definitely the case. I have the B&O and makes a difference to me - couldn't really hear the premium at speed with the roof down whereas the B&O has that extra power. And the quality is amazing. As others have said the Apple Carplay is excellent and allows voice activation of Nav etc. Because of SIRI it's better than any other system I have used as it can interpret complex instructions such as 'take me to a gastropub' or 'take me to my Dad's house'.
There are some 'cheapening' moves on the later car; petrol cap becoming plastic, valley cover under the bonnet losing the badge. I have managed to upgrade both of those back to original (or better), but have failed to find a way to get the leather seatbelt loops on the seats reinstated. That means the seatbelts rub on the seat and damage the leather. I never really liked the carbon bonnet vents so I have not bothered with those.
Never had the slightest problem with the dogleg gearbox - after all, up is up and down is down. If anything, having 2nd on the same plane as 3rd on a nice road is better, and 2nd to 5th as an H is really rather good in the country. Didn't the Italians used to do it that way for that reason?
Incredible the number of us that moved from one car into another virtually identical. Only time I have done that, so the car must be good.

A couple of additional points. On the lightweight seats they have definitely become less hardcore over the years and do have adjustability. When I specced our V12VR in 2012 I wanted the light weights on it but They were very harsh then. The latest ones are far more comfortable. You might be surprised with how you find them.

You will find it great for touring and you will be able to get more in it than you think. There was a guy doing double coat hooks for behind the seats that that gave amazing additional space. You can get more in the roadster than in a DB9 Volante believe it or not.

I'm guessing you are Amersham way - when lockdown over I would agree Works a good place to visit - just don't have a coffee with the Barista aka Simon Stanton -you will buy something I warn you now.
Have fun in your deliberations.

That’s a very kind offer....when we return to normality I may well take up on that

Yes not far from Amersham....my son plays/trains for cricket in Northampton so I am up and down past Newport Pagnell quite a lot. There’s Grange Hatfield as well....stuck my nose in there a few months ago...impressive shiny new showroom...but they seemed much keener to sell me a newer car than keep an eye out for a V12. Plus Works has got all the older cars to look at which for me is a huge bonus !
