My V8V is making an odd noise when 'making very good progress' through my regular middle-of-a-dual-carriageway roundabout - when I load up the nearside and a funny noise comes from the front end. It isn't the usual low frequency bearing rumble which I would recognise but more a higher frequency metallic grinding zinging with maybe some tingling through the steering. Definitely coming from the front and no, I am not going so fast that it's the tyres.

Only when really pressing on. At all other times, no noise, all is lovely and smooth.

Lifted the front, grabbed the wheel and gave it a 'wobble' and there is virtually nothing, barely perceptible, maybe a little more stiff resistance and slightly more movement than the offside when I do the same, which is rigid. Spin the wheel, smooth no noise. All looks fine, bolted up and secure.

So is this defo the wheel bearing starting to wear? Nothing else is binding and all looks good, pads evenly wearing etc.

Sounds like a bit of grit or stone trapped between the inner disc surface and the brake back plate to me.

Mike - I have a good wheel bearing which came off my 30,000 mile V8V. I’ve changed my bearings all round during the refurb.

Let me know if it’s of interest - it won’t be expensive !

Cheers

Thanks Jonny, will bear that in mind. Just did a rather good trackday in Bedford and no bearing rumbling or any noise to looseness at all - car was solid and brilliant (and the most gorgeous machine there, of course) from beginning to end, these cars are so tough. So I'll leave the bearing for a while - it just makes that metallic zinging noise on that roundabout, some months apart so I don't think it was taped grit or a stone. A mystery...

I went through a set of EBC Blue pads though, could do with a recommendation for alternatives. Time for a search...
