Have an early db9 with standard wheels / nuts , removed the wheels a couple of weeks ago and noticed that I was unable to fully seat my 22mm deep set socket over a couple of the wheel nuts , all the others were fine . Just had some ps4s tyres fitted and tyre fitter had same problem , told me that Aston basically use ford nuts which have an aluminum cap over a steel core and that there prone to swelling . Just wondering if anyone else had encountered the issue ?

Yes, this has been mentioned before on this forum. Corrosion on the inner steel nut builds up and expands, causing the outer Al case to bulge. Jaguar used the same type on the XJS; they look good superficially since they rust on the inside.

Have had exactly this reported back to me after my recent service, swollen nuts. A set of new nuts from Aston are £170ish. From what I can figure out they are 14 x 2.0 x 21mm tapered seat nuts. Apparently the same as some Ford Transit nuts?

Scuderia parts listed here

https://www.scuderiacarparts.com/part/185107/aston...

£2 each here

I will be visiting my local alloy wheel shop to check compatibility of generic nuts though.

Went to my local ford transit center , showed the parts guy my nuts but he said he wasn’t aware of anything similar on any of there van range . Bit the bullet and bought a complete set at a discount £145 from Aston works which is just around the corner

Further update may not be straight forward as hoped. The original nuts have a washer on the seat area whereas the aftermarket do not. So going to have to dig a bit deeper.

A lot of Range Rovers use a similar type of wheel nut, if anyone can check the sizes those may also be a cheaper option.

After a bit of research, I was unable to find replacement non o.e nuts. Therefore bought a set from the dealers in the end.

Buy a 23mm impact wrench socket and carry in the car. Job sorted. Old ones only swell so much/new ones will swell again over time.

Has anyone worked out what the expansion is caused by? I deconstructed an apparently swollen example and could not see any sign of corrosion. It’s almost as if the chromed sleeve stretches through use rendering it useless?

Need a 60deg conical nut - the ones linked are flat

Plus on the v12, you have to torque them to 180nm IIrC, be interested to know what the tolerance is on any cheaper nut.

I believe the chrome trim on the nut is not a particularly good fit on the nut beneath and it is secured on by the cone area at the bottom. In use, the chrome cover shifts around a bit on the nut underneath causing it to distort, giving the swollen effect although it is acually starting to internally round off.

Its the same design fault on most Ford cars Mondeo/Focus around the same age. I wonder if any of the Ford wheel nuts would fit.

Picked up a set of Titanium nuts for mine from Acer. Available in natural or black via a Physical Deposition Vapour (PVD) Process which I went for. No swelling or rusting smile

$399 i.e. £295 with free shipping. A bargain relative to McLaren or Ferrari Ti parts at less than half price or versus £170 for the horrible Ford parts.
