V8V 4.3 - Stumped by noise when cooling down

Evening all,

Long time lurker, who would very much appreciate the forums input before I make a complete doughnut of myself at the garage.

I have owned my V8V for around 2 months and love the car but have noticed what is to me a strange sound coming from the car after driving. I can only really describe the sound as like 'gravel going down a metal tube'. I have heard the noise once while driving but it mainly appears when the car is cooling down. I know that the V8V has it's own unique set of mechanical sounds but this one seems a little out of the ordinary to me, has anyone else had experience of this?

Any help of input much appreciated and I will upload some pics and a proper introduction tomorrow.

Heat shields cooling down. That’s the noise of something metallic changing temperature.

its the exhaust system cooling, these components reach extremely high temps so is completely normal sound to hear on every car

Surprised you’ve never heard it on any other cars. Perfectly normal.

yes, this is the normal sound of high temp metal contracting on cooling.

Again, another here who is surprised that you have not come across this before. I get this on every single car I've owned after a drive when temps are hot.

Just chipping in to say I listened to your video and I agree - exhaust cooling. You seemed to have the engine idling - I'll bet if you shut it off the exhausts would continue to make exactly the same noise. My newish V60 also pings occasionally as the exhaust cools.

To be fair I didn’t realise the engine was running in the video. I thought that hum noise was the fan. But yes your point is valid, that noise should continue when the car is turned off.

Having thought back I have heard a similar noise from other cars but not to the volume or frequency I experienced with this, not surprising given pervious cars would not encourage 'spirited' driving in the same way as this does!
